“Because I can’t be the good kid anymore,” she said. “I need—”

Leo’s desk phone rang. “Damn,” he said, racing to it. “Yes?” he said into the receiver. “Yes, she is, but we’re in a meeting! Tell him to—he said what?” Leo looked at Megan, and she knew then who “he” was. Her face suffused with heat.

“Jeez, okay, okay.” Leo held out the phone to her. “Your boyfriend wants to talk to you.”

“You’re kidding,” she said, though she knew he couldn’t be.

“Nope. I’m pretty sure he’s your boyfriend.”

“Leo.” She grabbed the phone, just to take that smirk off his face. “’Sandro, what are you doing? I’m at work!”

“Cara, I have the nomination! Best actor!”

His voice overflowed with excitement. She looked between Kane and Leo, who had obviously heard everything. Leo’s smirk was a little more understanding, and Kane’s eyebrows were halfway up his forehead. “Well, that’s incredible, Alessandro! Congratul—”

“Come with me,cara. Come with me to Hollywood.”

The room got blurry for a second. “Are you drunk?”

“No! No, I have just had coffee and Yasmin just called andtesoro, come with me. There will be—”

“’Sandro!” she interrupted, almost having to shout over his exuberance. He was talking so fast she almost couldn’t catch up. “Can I call you back in a couple of minutes?”

“I do not know if I can wait that long. I want you to meet everyone, and you can shop wherever you like for your dress and no one—”

“I have a job!” She pointed at Kane with the phone. “Stop looking at me like that!”

“I cannot see you,” Alessandro said as she put the phone back to her ear.

“Not you!” Dear God, her life had completely exploded. “I’ll call you back in a minute.”

She’d never heard him like this. He’d been amused, enthralled, intense, and pleased. But never this kind of… incandescent. It was hopelessly endearing. She wished she were with him right now, to hug him, to see his serious face light up with joy. She spent so much of her time making other people’s lives better. Now this important man in her life was experiencing a life-changing moment, and she wanted to be there with him.

“I will call you in one minute,” she repeated and hung up.

“You can’t be thinking of going with him,” Kane said at once. “You’ve known each other—”

“Imma stop you right there,” she said, putting up a hand. “How long did you know Ellen before you knew she was the one?”

“I—”

Megan raised an eyebrow at him, and he pressed his lips together.

“Actually,” Leo said. “It might be a good time for Megan to go.”

Megan spun around to him. “What?”

“What?” Kane echoed.

Leo held up his hands. “Calm down, big brother. We were about to suggest a couple weeks’ break anyway.”

“Yeah,” Kane said, “but she can’t leave the state!”

“Megan,” Leo said. “How bad do you want to move to manufacturing?”

She opened her mouth to give the pat answer:I can’t wait. But the gray depression that hovered at her side when she thought of it caught the words in her throat.

“I thought so,” Leo said.
