Dimitry, the boy from leadership strategy class, approaches our table. He’s good-looking with dark short-cropped hair and dark brown eyes and has a boyish appeal, but he pales compared to Oak.

“Good evening, ladies.”

“What do you want, Dimitry?” Camilla asks.

His eyes land on me. “I was hoping to ask an exquisite woman if she would care to accompany me to the winter formal.”

My stomach churns as I remember how Oak spoke to meafterseeing Dimitry’s hand on my thigh.

I never want to see Dimitry fucking Jakov near you again.

I chew my bottom lip, wondering how serious he was being. Dimitry can be forward, but I wouldn’t do anything with him. He may be attractive, but I don’t desire him. Oak can't tell me what to do with my life.

“So, what do you say, Eva?” Dimitry asks.

I swallow hard, realizing since I don’t have a date, it would be weird to refuse, not to mention, other than Dimitry being a little forward, he seems like an alright guy. “Sure, why not?” I can’t exactly take my hot as hell principal to the winter formal, anyway. The man I’ve fucked twice already, once after class last Friday in the classroom, and I haven't seen him since.

Dimitry’s smirk widens. “Great, can’t wait.” He winks, which makes my stomach churn.

Once he’s out of earshot, Natalya turns to me. “Dimitry?” She groans.

I turn to face her. “What? He seems alright.”

She rolls her eyes. “Yeah, for an egotistical, misogynistic pig.”

I laugh. “Don’t worry. I can fend for myself.”

At that moment, I feelhiseyes on me. Oak stands in the cafeteria’s corner, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his hard, muscled chest. His jaw is clenched, and his eyes are blazing with what I can only describe as rage, making my stomach churn.

Will he be jealous of me attending the winter formal with Dimitry?

I shake my head and draw my eyes away from Oak, listening as Adrianna rattles on about why she won’t be attending the winter formal with anyone. She comes across as a girl who likes to shun society’s expectations.

Oak can’t be jealous, as he can’t take me to the dance. It’s not like I’ve agreed to sleep with him, attend a dance with him. It’s been a week since we had sex in his cottage, a week since he took my innocence. Ever since, he’s kept his distance from me, which hurts. All he does is stare at me hungrily from afar.

“I can’t believe it’s less than two weeks until winter break,” Camilla says, shaking her head. “This semester has flown by.”

“Right. What will I do without you three?” Natalya asks.

“Do we have to go home for the winter break?” it’s crazy that I didn’t even want to attend this school at first, but now the prospect of returning to my parents for two weeks makes me sick to my stomach. I can’t think of anything worse than going home for winter break.

All three girls look at me like I’m crazy. “Why wouldn’t you want to?” Natalya asks.

I shake my head. “I hate my parents.”

She smiles. “I’m not exactly fond of my mother either, but I go home for my brother.” Her eyes turn a little misty with emotion. “I love him like a father.”

My throat closes up as I think about Karl. We were close, and when he died, it left a gaping hole in my world. It meant I was alone with them, the two people I despise most on this earth.

Camilla nods. “My father can be a bit of a nightmare, but my brothers would kill me if I didn’t go home.” Her brow furrows. “I’m sure they’d be happy for you to join us in Chicago this Christmas?”

I smile at her. “That’s kind of you, but I’m shit with people I don’t know.”

“Wouldn’t your parents wonder where you are, anyway?” Adrianna asks.

I shake my head. “One year, they forgot about me and drove down to my grandmother’s two hours south of Atlanta. They only noticed when they got there, and she questioned them.”

Natalya and Camilla gasp.
