"Or... you didn't want me constantly bothering you, which is why you didn't pick up my calls..." Aunt Mary interjected.

"Fair enough!" I replied.

"Oh Dax, I know you're old enough to take care of yourself, but you know I'm still responsible for you since your father isn't around... it wouldn't be good to see you coming home late!"

"Well, my father isn't here, so there's nothing to worry about," I reassured her.

"But I'm in charge of you for now... so that means I'm here to keep an eye on you and make sure you come back early!"

"Aunt, please... I can take care of myself and live my life the way I want. I no longer need your guidance, and I'm far from being a child," I defended, my words laced with an undeniable resolve.

"But for now, you're still under my care... Can't you at least tell me where you're headed?" she pleaded, her voice filled with concern.

"I'll let you know if I feel like it," I replied, refusing to make any empty promises. I've never been one for commitments; they trap me, suffocate me.

"Oh, Dax... what will it take for you to listen to me?" Aunt Mary's voice held its usual worry. She knew just how stubborn I could be. I march to the beat of my own drum, regardless of how it affects her or anyone else.

I didn't respond to her plea, allowing the silence to engulf us once more.

It was in this silence that my thoughts resurfaced, thoughts I believed had long been forgotten.

Interrupting the heavy silence, I called out to Aunt Mary, the question burning in my mind, "Aunt Mary."

"Yes, Dax?" she replied, her voice tinged with a hint of anticipation.

"Have you ever experienced rejection?" I asked, my voice tinged with curiosity.

"What kind of rejection? Are you talking about being rejected by family, loved ones, or in the context of a job?" She questioned.

"No, not like that... What I mean is, have you ever been rejected by someone, especially someone you love?" I clarified.

"Like a romantic partner?" She inquired.

"Exactly!"

"No, I haven't. Why do you ask?" She replied, her tone betraying a hint of confusion.

"Uh... never mind!" I quickly changed the subject, attempting to dismiss the question.

"Have you ever faced rejection?" She threw my question back at me.

"Perhaps!" I blurted out involuntarily.

"By whom?" She pressed for more information.

"Someone I think I have developed feelings for..." I admitted, my voice faltering slightly.

"You? Having feelings for someone..." She mocked, his words laced with familiarity, as if she knew me better than anyone.

"I'm not joking, really. I'm being serious..." I asserted, hoping to shut down any potential laughter.

"Wow... so you're actually serious?" She observed.

I nodded. "Yes."

"How did this rejection happen?" She inquired, seemingly unaware of my previous response.

"I just mentioned that it was by the person I thought I had feelings for..." I hastily replied.
