She paused for a moment before continuing, "And as fate would have it, he's also a single parent, just like me."

After a brief pause, she finally spoke, careful with her choice of words. "I wish I could provide you with more details, my love, but all I can say for now is that he happens to have a son. And as fate would have it, this boy also attends the same school as Skye."

The words hung in the air, swirling with intrigue. My mind raced with questions. Mom's reluctance to share further information only fueled my curiosity, creating an air of mystery that shrouded the conversation.

My heart fluttered at the mere thought, its beats forming a rhythm that echoed the uncertainty that now enveloped me.

I couldn't help but gasp. "Wait, he goes to the same school as me?" I eagerly questioned. "Which grade is he in?" I bombarded my mom with my curiosity. As always, it seemed like she deliberately chose to ignore my questions and turned her attention to Kenneth instead. It grated on my nerves how she constantly favored him over me.

"Let's celebrate this wonderful coincidence," my mom announced cheerfully. "I'll prepare a delicious meal today, and guess what, Kenneth? It's your absolute favorite!" I couldn't bear to stay in the room any longer. I hated the way she always treated Kenneth as the favorite. It was painful to watch and only worsened the insecurities I already felt.

Just as I was about to leave, my mom called out my name, causing me to pause in my steps. I turned to face her, realizing that I hadn't actually gone too far from the dining table. "Skye, I've got something special for you," she said, reaching into her bag. To my amazement, she pulled out a large novel. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Mesmerized by the book, I hurriedly walked towards my mom and eagerly took it from her hands. Even though it was heavy and boasted over a thousand pages, I felt a sense of determination bubbling within me. I'd never read such a lengthy novel before, but I felt compelled to take on the challenge.

"How did you get it?" I asked, my voice filled with disbelief.

"Well, from a quaint little bookshop, my dear," Mom responded, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "The moment I laid eyes on it, I knew it was meant for you."

I was at a loss for words, just like my brother standing beside me. Mom's unexpected act of thoughtfulness caught me off guard. Typically, whenever I asked her to buy books for me, she brushed me off claiming not to have enough money. Yet, she always seemed to have the funds to spoil Kenneth with gifts. It felt unfair, so it was only natural for me to be surprised by her sudden change in behavior. I couldn't help but wonder if something in our relationship was about to shift.

"You're welcome," Mom replied with a touch of warmth in her voice, even though I had yet to express my gratitude.

Unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I blurted out, "Mom, you've never been this nice to me before. Why the sudden change?"

My words caught her off guard, and her expression softened. "Perhaps it's time for me to apologize for the way I've treated you all these years," she admitted, genuine regret lacing her words. "I want to make amends while I still can."

Well, I suppose Mom had been quite the jerk to me, and her apology only highlighted just how sorry she truly was. She seemed genuinely remorseful, I had to admit. "So, you're willing to make it up to me?" I pressed, needing confirmation.

"Anything, Skye. Just name it, and I'll do whatever it takes to make you happy," Mom assured me convincingly.

Caught between surprise and satisfaction, I decided to voice my desires. "Well, I was thinking that I could use more books..."

Before I could finish my sentence, Mom cut in eagerly, "Consider it done!"

"Well nooo... I want something more than just books!" I exclaimed, my voice filled with longing.

"Well then, what is it that you desire?" my mother asked, her eyes filled with curiosity.

"Can you at least tell me who the son of the man you're marrying is?" I pleaded.

"But darling, I've already told you it's a surprise... I can't reveal that information!" she replied, a mischievous smile playing on her lips.

"I'm not a fan of surprises, Mom. Just give me a hint," I replied, growing increasingly curious.

"Alright, I'll give you a small clue," she acquiesced, her eyes sparkling. "He's in your class, and he's exceptionally intelligent. The very best, in fact."

It's a boy!

"But I'm the top student in my class!" I exclaimed, my mind racing to put the pieces together.

"That's all I can tell you, Skye. You'll have to figure out the rest yourself or wait for the surprise to unfold," my mom teased.

"And when exactly will you unveil the surprise?" I demanded, unable to contain my impatience.

"In the next six months!" she announced, her words hanging in the air.

"Six months!" I gasped, my mouth falling open. "That's an eternity! How can you expect me to wait that long to know the surprise?" I complained, turning to my mom for answers.
