“Yeah, he threw up just before he went on stage,” Ava snorted. “I told the fucker to not have that last drink!”

“Well, none of them showed their nerves on stage.” I could see David circling me in the distance. MuseX and Kingsley were still at the table with me, so I was pretty sure he wouldn’t try it.

“Who is that dude stalking you?” Ava questioned. “That’s the third lap he’s done around our table.”

“My old boss. We have history. Hopefully, he’ll go away. Things went down with him and Alex, too. David is only circling because Alex isn’t here.”

“Oh, fuck that shit! I’ll handle the dick if he comes over. I’m good at protecting my friends. I’m a great guard dog.” I had no doubt in what Ava was telling me. She was a redhead for a start. Most redheads I knew were crazy. “I’m guessing this history was sexual?”

“Yeah, I chose Alex over him. Things got pretty complicated.”

“I’m not sure anyone could deny Alex. I imagine it’s even worse when he’s trying to claim your heart.” She made a fair point. “That other dude must have known he never stood a chance! Alex freaking Harbour or him…. hmm…yeah, okay!”

As I laughed at her response, David made his way toward me. Shit! “Nat, can I have a private word?” David was leering down my cleavage, clearly aroused. “It will only take a minute.”

I was about to reply, but Ava beat me to it. “Look, asshole! The woman is married now! To Alex Freaking Harbour. Move the fuck on!” I loved this woman! “If he catches you near this table you’ll be in big fucking trouble!”

“And who the fuck are you?” David seethed.

“Your worst nightmare! Now fuck off!” Ava stood up, squaring her shoulders as she stood in front of me. “You’re not getting Nat alone! Did you want to cause a scene here with all these cameras?” Damn, she really was a good guard dog. I was pretty sure Shane would have offered her a job if he was here. David walked away without another word.

“Wow! You weren’t kidding about being protective, were you?” I snorted as Ava sat back down next to me.

“My best friend back in the UK used to have a lot of man trouble. I had to scare off a lot of guys. She’s okay now. She’s met the love of her life. Actually, Alex sang her happy birthday on Zach’s phone last year. You might remember it, you were there.”

“Oh, yes, I do remember that! We’d only just signed the band then.” I could vaguely remember Alex doing that.

“Yeah, Bella freaked out so much! It was hilarious! That was the best birthday gift I ever got her!”

“Did you and Bella grow up following Steel Roses?”

“Yeah, we were obsessed!”

“My best friend, Liv, and I were the same.” I smiled, watching as Alex took to the stage with a guitar. Holy shit! He was performing. The fucker had kept that quiet! He’d gotten changed out of his tux and was in his legendary denim jeans, white vest, and leather jacket. The whole place erupted.

“Fuck! Alex is playing tonight?” Ava widened her eyes at me!

“It would seem so! I had no idea!” As he began to strum his guitar, the band behind him came into view. Fuck! Cody and Masen were on stage, too, with Lance playing lead guitar! Matt was going to be spitting feathers watching this. My eyes found him at the table near us. He was arguing with David, pointing aggressively at the stage.

“Are you ready to rock with my friends?” Alex yelled over the microphone. Everyone was screaming, including Ava next to me. They played one of Alex’s solo songs ‘Fear’ from an earlier album of his. As I listened, remembering the lyrics, I knew exactly why he’d picked this song to play. ‘I have no fear of losing myself. Darkness, take me now!’ This could have been a song about me, yet Alex had written this over ten years ago! Fuck, the thought that Alex had felt darkness and pain like my own nearly consumed me. Tears came to my eyes, but I quickly held them back. If he could get through his trauma around Ness, I could get past my own.

“Holy shit! That voice!” Ava called in my ear. “How do you not melt every time he’s near you?”

“He was a fucking asshole when I first met him!” I sighed, thinking back to that first day when Alex thought I was a groupie Steve had sent up for him. “These days, I do have to keep pinching myself. Being with a rock star isn't easy, but if you really love him, I promise it’s worth it.”

As Alex finished his set, the whole place started shouting for more. “Not tonight folks! We have an award show to finish. You might see more from me and my friends soon, though. Make sure you’re signed up for my newsletter on my website for more news!” Well, that was a clever, shameless self plug. I loved this man! He was a genius!

My eyes flicked over to Matt, who was shooting daggers at me. Something told me that when Alex got back to the table, shit would hit the fan.

The Midnight Outcasts got back to our table first. They were all buzzing, the adrenaline clearly still flowing through their veins. The gauntlet had gone well according to Zach and Cole. They’d caught Alex’s performance while heading back from the press room.

My eyes met with Alex as he was coming back, and in that moment, Matt sprang into action, making an aggressive stalk toward him. “Fuck, Matt is making a beeline for Alex. Someone help him!” I yelled at Kingsley, Cole and Zach. Noah and Brad had gone to the bar with Adian and Nadia. Talk about timing! We really could have done with their help, too. Matt made a swing for Alex, but he ducked, pushing Matt back into David. Ugh! Of course he had to get involved, too! Was there ever an event where these two didn’t start fighting?

Cole and Zach had got in to break up the fight by the time I got there. Lance, Cody and Mason had arrived seconds later.

“Matt, don’t be a fucking dick!” Cody hollered! “You fucking did this! We aren’t doing anything wrong. This isn’t Steel Roses music, and you fucking know it! We’re making music with Alex!”

“You always side with him, you gutless pieces of shit! After everything he’s done! He doesn’t care about you! He’s a selfish asshole!”
