“I don’t know,” he replied. A bad feeling lodged in his gut. “I have to get there.”

“Want me to go with you?”

“No,” he said, shaking his head. “If something is going down, I don’t want you in the middle of it. Especially now.”

He placed a palm on her still flat belly.

“Okay. Well, at least there isn’t a shadow on you.”

He leaned over and kissed her on the lips. “Good to know. I’ll call you.”

“Love you.”

“Love you back.”

As Brim drove closer to the clubhouse, he noticed a plume of dark smoke rising in the air and dread crept across his mind. He throttled the engine and sped up. As soon as he rounded the last corner, he saw smoke billowing out, smothering visibility. Men fought the fire consuming the clubhouse. Two bodies laid draped with sheets over them, patches of red splotches bleeding through the virginal white. He parked and quickly ran over to Thorn, who had a bandanna over the lower half of his face. Streaks of black soot dotted his face.

“What the fuck happened?” he shouted.

“Near as I can tell, a bomb.”

“Bolt called me, said there was a package addressed to me by the door. I told him to move it … Jesus.Itold him to move it. Fuck!”

“Stop,” Thorn said, placing a hand on Brim’s shoulder. “This wasn’t your fault. Some fucker came onto our property to harm you, and when we find out who it was, I plan on slicing all his flesh off.”

The fire was snuffed out, and through the smoke, Brim could see half the clubhouse was gone, smashed to charred pieces. The living room, kitchen, bar, and his office were destroyed. He turned and marched over to the bodies, kneeling to lift the top of the sheets. The first man had been Tim, a recent patched-in brother. The other body was Bolt. Brim sucked in a sharp breath.

Goddammit!

Motherfucking hell!

He covered the fallen men once more and rose. Thorn stood at his side, waiting.

“I want their families compensated. Full honor funeral.”

“Understood,” Thorn replied. “A couple of the men that were close went to the hospital with minor burns and scrapes.”

“Grab the camera from the front gate and check the footage, see if we caught the asshole who did this.”

“I’ve already sent the stream to Mac.”

Brim nodded, remembering the computer hacker of the White Death MC.

“Good,” he said. “I’m going to head to the hospital to check on the others.”

“I’ll handle everything here,” Thorn said. “The fire’s out so we’ll start clearing away the debris.”

“No one called this in, did they?”

“No.”

“Keep it that way. This is an internal matter. No cops. No fire department. We’ll handle this ourselves.”

“Understood,” Thorn said. “Hey, Brim? You know any one of us would lay our life down for yours, right? Bolt wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”

Brim let out a deep sigh. “Yeah. I know. Doesn’t stop the guilt, though. Call me if you find anything.”
