He hummed, the corner of his mouth trembling with a suppressed smile. “Is that so?”

“Mm-hmm.” I lifted up on my toes for another kiss. “And I’m also thinking I’m so damn grateful the tides turned for us. That you came back and put it all on the line for me, because I can’t imagine my life without you in it. I love you, Beau.”

His nostrils flared on a deep inhale, his pupils dilating as he stared down at me. “I love you too, Bubbles. Have since I was a kid and will until my last breath.”

The sound of breaking glass broke our little moment, but that was okay, we had a lifetime of them ahead of us.

When I turned to see what happened, my brows slammed together in a worried frown. Colbie was standing in the middle of the bar, shattered glass all around her feet from where she’d dropped her cocktail, but she wasn’t paying any attention to that. She was too busy staring at the person who’d just walked through the door.

Sheriff Kincade Michaels.

And he was staring right back at her. In fact, it seemed she was the only one he had eyes for at the moment. I waited with bated breath to see what would happen, then my heart sank into my stomach when Colbie’s face went white as a sheet right before she whipped around on heels and bolted for the back of the bar.

“What’s going on there?” Beau asked, his concerned gaze trailing off after my best friend.

I let out a weary sigh and shook my head. “Colbie had a little too much liquid courage the other night and decided it was high time she made a move on the man she’s been crushing on for years.”

He looked down at me, his brows winging up toward his hairline. “She finally made a move?”

I winced, pulling my bottom lip between my teeth. “Yeah, but it didn’t exactly work out. He shot her down. Apparently, he’s not interested.”

And he’d crushed her in the process. I’d been trying to pick up the pieces of my friend’s shattered pride for days now, and I was starting to worry.

Beau let out a thoughtful hum. “Not so sure about that, Bubbles.”

“What? Why?”

“Well, first, because Colbie’s a catch. She’s smart and beautiful and funny as hell, and the only person with a bigger heart is you.” Ilovedthat he saw all the wonderful things that made my best friend so amazing. “But also because that’s not the look of a man who isn’t interested in a woman. That’s the look of a man who sees something he wants and has every intention of getting it.”

I swung back around in time to see Cade storming off after Colbie, his features set in hard, determined lines. Giddy excitement swirled in my belly like a soda can that had been shaken up. “You know what, baby? I think you might be right.” I knew the look Cade was wearing because I’d seen the very same one on Beau’s face when he was pursuing me. “This will definitely be interesting. I can’t wait to see how it plays out.”

Because the only thing better than having my own fairy-tale ending was if my bestie had hers as well.

I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

The End.
