But he clarifies. “The reason I ask is because there are a couple of cops checking out a black Chevy parked near the highway.”

I feel my face ashen as I squeeze Quinn’s hand in dread.

“Just wondering if it was yours, that’s all,” Justin says innocently.

Shit, we shouldn’t have stopped.

Justin looks at me, and a big smile passes over his amused face. “Are you causing trouble again, Mia Lee?”

Shrugging as casually as I can, considering our predicament, I give him a small smile and reply, “What can I say, Justin? Trouble seems to follow wherever I go.”

Quinn looks calm, while I’m borderline having a full-blown panic attack.

“If you guys like, I can give you a ride? I’m headed for Canada. I’m not sure where you’re headed, but I’d love the company,” Justin says, and I wonder what the hell he is doing in the South if he’s on his way to Canada.

This doesn’t make sense.

I look at Quinn, who shakes his head, his long hair slipping into one narrowed eye. “No, we’re good.”

My eyes widen. What’s he doing? We need wheels…

“Okay, well, I’m just going to use the restroom. The offer stands if you change your mind. Catch you around, Mia,” he says, stepping forward to give me another hug.

Quinn still has my hand and is not letting go, so I awkwardly give him a one-handed hug.

“See you, Justin.”

And he gives me a warm smile before taking off.

As soon as he’s out of hearing range, I shake my hand out of Quinn’s, spinning around to face him.

“Quinn, we have to go with him.”

“Over my dead body.”

“What about the police?” I whisper. “We can’t steal another car because they are onto us, and are no doubt just waiting for us to fuck up and hot-wire another so they can track us. Hitching a ride with Justin makes sense. We can evade the police by riding with him.

“Just until we’re far enough away from here, then we’ll part ways. It’s the only option we have right now,” I say, pleading with him to see reason on this.

Quinn’s jaw clenches, his livid eyes meeting mine.“If we ride with him, I may quite possibly kill him.”

Raising an eyebrow, I stupidly question, “What’s your problem with Justin?”

Quinn laughs, but in no way is it a happy sound. “I don’t even know where to start, but let’s just say, if he so much as looks at you like he’s fantasizing about you naked, I will happily gouge out his eyeballs.”

My mouth falls open into an O.

He’s jealous.

“Quinn, listen to me.” I take a step toward him and place a palm on his cheek.“I’m yours.”

My brutal honesty is needed because we’re running out of time.

“So push aside that huge ego because we’re doing this.”

I’m not sure if it’s my determination or honesty, but Quinn finally nods.

“Fine. But I meant what I said.”
