“I’m so confused,” I finally stammered.

He let out an exasperated sigh. “Do you really have no idea how I feel about you?”

“You barely speak to me.”

“You’re the only person I speak to at all.”

My eyes dropped to his lips and I licked mine subconsciously.

He groaned, as if irritated I wasn’t getting the point. “I’ve been a mess all week walking around pretending I don’t remember what you feel like, what you taste like.” He reached out and brushed my cheek. “You ignore me like I mean nothing to you, but you’ve occupied every inch of my mind since that night. It’s a problem. And now you parade this date in front of my face? I can’t take it. I can’t see this and stay sane.”

I opened and closed my mouth. His words had rendered me momentarily speechless.

“I may have misread the situation.” I said carefully.

His gaze hardened. “You think?”

I gulped and suppressed my nerves. “So, you don’t regret what we did?”

He cursed before taking his hand and firmly gripping the back of my neck. He pulled my face to meet his before covering my mouth. His lips moved over mine with need before he nipped my bottom lip. I immediately melted into him, having thought about his lips countless times since the last time I felt them.

When he broke away, my knees went weak and the support of the door threshold was all that kept me upright.

“Please leave with me now,” he pleaded. “We need to talk.”

I started to nod but then slowly shook my head. “I can’t leave Liam.”

He kissed me again, this time slipping his tongue into my mouth to explore even deeper. I kissed him back, my head growing fuzzier and fuzzier.

“I can’t watch you go back out there,” he whispered against my mouth.

I sighed, frustrated with my complete lack of self-control. “Give me five minutes.”

Twenty minutes, one excuse about not feeling well, and one painfully awkward car ride later, I unlocked the door to my apartment, letting myself and Nathan inside.

I surveyed my living room, praying I had left things at least remotely tidy. When Nathan had suggested coming here, my gut reaction had been to say no. But considering he didn’t live alone, this was our only chance at some privacy.

Edward curled around the corner and meowed before brushing up against the side of Nathan’s leg. I expected Nathanto look uncomfortable, he didn’t strike me as a cat guy. Instead, he leaned down and scratched Edward’s head.

“What’s his name?”

“Edward.” I breathed a sigh of relief that they seemed to get along. While I had no idea what the hell was going on between the two of us, not liking cats would always be a deal breaker.

“That’s an awfully formal name for a cat.”

“It’s from Twilight,” I admitted.

He looked at me blankly.

“You know? The vampire romance saga? It was huge like ten or so years ago.”

“So you’ve had him a long time?” he asked, still scratching Edward who had now flipped over to show his stomach.

I winced. “I just adopted him a year ago.”

He chuckled.

“Come in,” I said, eager to change the subject.
