Instead, I eat until I’m stuffed like a tick and pretend to be scared of the Ringwraiths so Melissa will snuggle me on the couch, and it’s…wonderful.

Almost as wonderful as being inside her and if that doesn’t mean it’s probably too late to stop the “falling in love” stuff, I don’t know what is.

Chapter 15

Melissa

I’m up before dawn the next morning, my entire body tingling from the steamiest sex dream I’ve had in a while. In the dream, Aaron and I were hobbits hiding from the Ringwraiths in a cave. But it was a warm, cozy cave, with a huge bed and a fireplace and a sex swing we put to excellent use.

I wasn’t aware I knew what a sex swing was, let alone how to use it, but my subconscious is fertile soil.

Fertile and perverted…

There was also some kind of magical vibrating egg in the dream, that Hobbit Aaron employed with great skill and enthusiasm, slipping it inside me while he took my butt virginity.I’ve never had much interest in butt stuff. It just seemed messy and more trouble than it was worth, considering I have a perfectly lovely hole designed for sexy times.

But after that dream…

Well, if Aaron were here and happened to have lube and a vibrating egg, I’d be tempted to call in sick to work and wander down all the kinky roads with him.

“I have to get new batteries for my vibrator,” I mutter to the ceiling. If I don’t get some relief from the sexual tension building in this house, I’m going to do something I’ll regret—like run down the hall and jump in bed with the wrong man.

Heisthe wrong man, no matter how right last night felt.

The only way this could possibly work is if he finds out he needs surgery and ends up sticking around until the summer.Or quitting professional hockey for good if he doesn’t heal as fully as he’s expecting.

But I can’t wish for that, not even to spend more time with a guy I’m starting to think could be someone really special. He’s worked so hard for so long, and he’s an incredible player.I want his dreams to come true, even if those dreams aren’t compatible with mine.

I’ll just try to be grateful for this time and worry about how much I’m going to miss my new roomie later.

Scratching, scuttling noises sound overhead, reminding me of the raccoons in the attic, but this morning, the sounds don’t stress me out.Aaron’s already scheduled the pest control guy to return later today. He said he’d be back to let him in after his scans.

By the time I get home from work with Chase, my home should be vermin-free.

I reach for my phone, shooting Ben a text—Hey, just wanted to let you know that the police department will be driving by to do welfare checks on the house starting today.A friend of Aaron’s, who runs a security guard company, will be checking on us, too.So, Chase is completely safe to come home with me tonight.I’ll pick him up from daycare and bring him back to your place on Saturday.Hope you have a great day.Hug Chase for me and tell him we’ll do dirty green beans tonight.

Reading it over, I decide the tone—friendly, but firm—is on point and send it over. Then, I swing out from under the covers and dress in light wash jeans and a clingy black sweater.I’m mostly doing admin stuff today, but on the off chance I need to head into the kitchen to tweak the icing on the cakes I made yesterday or help Tessa with the appetizers she’s making for the library’s fundraising dance, I can always throw an apron on over my clothes.

I pad quietly downstairs, not wanting to wake Aaron, but when I get to the kitchen, he’s there filling the kettle.

“Hey,” I say with what feels like a goofy grin.“I thought you’d be sleeping in.”

He shakes his head and swipes a hand down his face.“Nah, I was tired of having nightmares about Ringwraiths.”

I hum sympathetically.“Yeah, me, too.”

No need to tell him what I wasreallydreaming about…

“And I might be a little anxious about the scans this afternoon,” he adds, fetching two mugs from the cupboard.

I nod, my smile fading as I lean against the counter.“I bet.But you’ve been doing so well. You’ve snapped back way faster than I expected you to.When I first saw you in the hospital, I was really worried. But you don’t even seem to be in that much pain anymore.”

“Yeah, I’m good at faking it,” he says, turning back to me with a sigh.He nods toward his shoulder.“It hurts like a son of a bitch. And my scar is starting to itch. And I think I hurt my back lying down in bed last night.”He sighs again, more theatrically this time.“I’m an old man.An old, crusty man who can’t even shave his neck or tidy up his beard for his doctor’s appointment.”

Pushing away from the counter, I nod.“We can take care of that.I’ll go grab some things from the bathroom and tidy you up before I leave.”

He blinks and shakes his head, looking surprised.“Oh, no, you don’t have to do that.I was just bitching to be funny.Or, to try to be funny.Joking helps with the existential angst.”

“But you’ll feel better if you’re putting your best foot forward,” I say, backing toward the doorway.“And we have plenty of time. We’re up early and I don’t have a fussy little man to feed breakfast this morning.”The pot starts to whistle on the stove, and I nod toward it.“Make the coffee.I’ll have a cup to make sure my fingers are awake, then take care of your fuzz.”
