No wonder she’d taken so long. She looked incredible.

I told her as much, watching her skin pink up as she blushed.

We walked down to the restaurant and I couldn’t help putting my palm on her bare lower back, licking my lips as I glanced down at her ass. She was looking straight ahead, her shoulders stiff.

As we stood outside the restaurant, she looked even more nervous, so I paused with my hand on the door, other hand still on her lower back.

“Would you like to go somewhere else?” I asked. “Away from all my family?”

Katie broke into a relieved smile. “Yes,please,” she pleaded, a slight pout on her mouth, and I chuckled.

“There are some wonderful restaurants around here. Take your pick: Italian, Mexican?—”

“Ooh, Mexican,” she said excitedly, bouncing on her stiletto heels, and it was so cute I wanted to lean down and kiss her.

Instead, I led her down the block and she wrapped her hand around my bicep again. I realized in that moment how much I liked the feeling of her arm linked within mine.

I called my driver when we got to the corner. Once he arrived, we made our way to a little Mexican place, and Katie looked around in awe.

“This is a lot nicer than the places we have near Seattle,” she said, and I laughed.

“Yeah, this is a real tourist spot, and they have great restaurants and bars. This place does have the best margaritas in town, though.”

Katie wrinkled her nose. “I had a bad experience with margaritas in college.” Then she paused. “But I think they were accompanied by extra shots of tequila, so...”

I chuckled. “I get that. I still can’t drink vodka because I chugged a fifth of it on a dare in college.”

Katie laughed, the sound bubbly and musical.I could get used to hearing that. Maybe it was a good thing she was playing hard to get. Maybe I would get in too deep if we were actually sleeping together, actually dating.

We were seated at a window booth and Katie instantly ordered fajitas while I ordered chimichangas, as well as a pitcher of strawberry margaritas.

Katie took a sip gingerly but then her brown eyes widened.

“Amazing,” she mumbled, and I nodded, clinking my margarita glass with hers. “Thank you for tonight. I wasn’t ready to face Toby and Rachel again.”

I shrugged. “It was the least I could do, after how good you were with Colin,” I told her.

“He’s a sweet kid. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t like him.”

“He can be a little heathen,” I chuckled.

“I teach a lot of kids that can be little heathens, too,” Katie said defensively. “It just means they have big personalities.”

“Colin definitely has that,” I muttered, looking over at her. “You look amazing.”

“You’ve already said that.” She gave me a small smile.

I leaned across the table, looking into her eyes. “It needed to be said twice.”

“There weren’t any prices on the menu,” Katie said nervously, obviously trying to change the subject. I shook my head, smiling at her.

“You don’t need to worry about that. I told you, everything’s on me.”

She looked at me curiously. “Just how wealthy are you?”

I grinned. “Let’s just say I’ve done pretty well for myself.”

Katie sipped her margarita and nodded.
