“What does that mean, Adam?” she asked, but I was already drifting off.

Chapter 10

Katie

Iwoke up alone in Adam’s bed, and I instantly missed his warmth even though he’d pulled the covers up around me. I frowned, getting up and stumbling to the shower. I was sure he’d just gone out to get breakfast, or even better, some coffee.

I got in the shower, sore all over with bruises on my neck and inner thighs from Adam’s nipping at me. Some of them were hickeys and some just from his fingers—when I ran my hand along them, I shivered.

God, the sex had been so good. I’d never come that much in one night, and it felt like Adam could have gone again after some rest. I took a long time in the shower, and when I came out, I started to realize that all of Adam and Colin’s things were gone.

I stared at the empty hotel room. He’d actually left the bed-and-breakfast without telling me goodbye. What kind of guy does that?

A guy who stole his brother’s inheritance,a voice in my mind said.Just like Toby said, he’s the bad guy.

How could I have so poorly misjudged him? Addie had told me to go for it, at least have fun with the hot billionaire, and I guessed that I had, but at what cost?

I’d started developing real feelings for him—the lovemaking hadn’t helped matters, but I couldn’t believe he was justgone.

I didn’t want to judge or assume anything before I knew for sure, so I got dressed and gathered my things before walking downstairs, asking the front desk meekly if Adam Lanphier had checked out.

The attendant smiled at me. “Yes, ma’am. He left you something.”

He handed me an envelope and when I opened it, there was a check for six grand. I frowned. It made me feel like a prostitute. Had he really only used me to piss his brother off and for sex?

My heart sank somewhere around my toes. I had dressed in the same sundress I wore to the wedding and with all the bite marks and bruises he’d left on me on full display, I felt dirty. Now that I knew for sure he had just left without saying goodbye after the night we’d had, I felt like I needed another shower.

I was about to run back up to my room, but then I heard the bridesmaids tittering in the corner.

“Did you hear that big fight Toby and Rachel had after the wedding?” a redhead asked.

“Weren’t they supposed to be leaving for their honeymoon?” a blonde piped in.

“Yeah,” the redhead replied, “but they left late because Toby was sleeping it off, he was so drunk, apparently,” she said . “I guess that’s why Rachel was pissed off.”

“You know it probably has something to do with that ex of Toby’s showing up with hisbrother,” the blonde said, and I hid around the corner of the wall, not wanting them to see me, my heart beating fast.

“That was a real power move,” the redhead said almost admiringly. “I kind of respect it. I give Toby and Rachel six months to a year,” she added flatly.

“And what about Adam? He’s become so hot and sexy in the last few years,” the blonde said, and I didn’t want to hear any more.

Adam had left me high and dry, and I didn’t care if Toby and Rachel were on the rocks. That was what they deserved, after all, given what they’d done to me. But I didn’t deserve Adam leaving the way he had.

I suddenly received a text, and I frowned as I looked at my phone seeing it was from Adam.

Left you a check.

Was that all he had to say to me? After such a wonderful night of lovemaking?

It was clear that I was just a challenge to him after all, just a prize to be won, and I felt oddly heartbroken. I knew that I didn’t know him that well, but I was really coming around to him, and now I just felt awful.

Realizing I still had Adam’s credit card in my purse, I called myself a cab to take me home. I didn’t want to cry in front of any of the wedding party, so I walked outside to wait and thankfully made it into the back of the car before I broke down.

“Are you all right, miss?” the nice cab driver asked, and I tried to get myself together.

“Always cry at weddings,” I mumbled, and he didn’t ask me anything else.

When I arrived home, I undressed and checked out myself in the mirror, naked, looking at all the marks that Adam had left on me, before getting into another shower, trying to wash the scent of him off me.
