By the time I arrived at work, she still hadn’t answered.

I was typing out a long text telling her that I was sorry and I didn’t mean to leave like I did, about how I had work and had to get home, when a text dinged in my notification bar.

You’re just as bad as your brother. Leave me alone.

I gritted my teeth. That was the worst thing she could have said to me, and I was sure she knew it. I had to talk her into seeing me, just one last time. I had to convince her that she was wrong.

Chapter 12

Katie

Icouldn’t believe I was sitting in the back seat of Adam’s driver’s car, on the way to his house. How had I let him talk me into coming?

The only thing that made me want to go was that Adam said that he would tell me everything about their family’s inheritance and what happened. I knew that Toby was a liar, he’d certainly cheated on me and lied about Rachel, so it was quite possible he’d made Adam out to be worse than he really was.

However, I wasn’t interested in pursuing anything further with Adam, not anymore. Not after the way he’d just left me, made me feel used and abused.

As much as I told myself that, though, I knew it wasn’t exactly true. I felt drawn to him in many ways. I was drawn to how attractive he was, how successful he was, howgreathe was in bed. I couldn’t deny that the time I spent with him, especially in his bed, were some of the best moments of my life. But that didn’t mean I was going to give in to his charms. I absolutely wasnotgoing to.

Besides, surely Colin and the nanny would be home. Adam couldn’t talk me into his bed, anyway.

I took a deep breath as the driver pulled up to the house, and I was shocked by how huge it was.

It was just him, Colin, and maybe a couple of nannies. It looked large enough to have twenty bedrooms and was more of a mansion than a house.

When I walked into the entryway, Adam was standing there wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. I immediately flashed back to the first time we met, at the Christmas party, when he was wearing a tight t-shirt and jeans. I found him so sexy then, and now that I knew what was underneath...

I swallowed hard, looking at him and trying to keep his gaze, keeping my chin tilted up.

“You’re mad at me,” Adam drawled, leaning against the doorjamb.

“Mad? Why would I be mad?” I asked calmly, even though my blood was boiling.

“You said I was worse than my brother,” he replied, and something flashed in his blue eyes. “You know that’s not true.” He stepped toward me, trailing his fingers along the hickey on my neck.

I cleared my throat and stepped away. “Where’s Colin?” I asked tightly.

“He’s not home from soccer practice yet. It’s just going to be me and you for a while.”

Great. Safety net gone, I thought.

I turned to leave. “I should go.”

Adam grabbed my wrist. “At least wait until Colin comes home. He’s been asking about you. Just say hi to him, and it’ll make his day.”

I softened, turning toward him. “Fine. I’ll stay, but just until he gets home.”

Adam nodded. “I want you to know, I didn’t leave because I wasn’t interested in telling you goodbye,” he said.

“You didn’t?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from pitching up in a hopeful tone.

“I had wall to wall meetings at work. I didn’t give myself a vacation from my vacation,” he said.

“O-oh,” I stuttered. I guessed that was as good a reason as any to leave me like that, but I still didn’t like it. “You said you were going to tell me the truth about Toby,” I demanded to know.

“I will. Please come and sit down.”

He gestured to the huge living room and I sat down on a corner of the large, sectional couch.
