I stood up and got dressed, leaving her in the bedroom alone.
Chapter 14
Katie
Adam had left me alone in the bedroom after he’d gotten dressed, and I didn’t like the way it made my heart sink. He’d all but admitted to having feelings for me, but getting up immediately after he was satisfied just didn’t sit well. I knew Colin was coming home soon but still...
In a way it made me feel like I was just a piece of ass, after all. Things felt awkward instead of easy, like they had before.
I got dressed and went out into the hallway, spotting Adam just ahead.
I wanted to say something to him, give him a piece of my mind, but I didn’t quite know where to start.
Hey, you’re being kind of an asshole?
Can we cuddle for a few minutes?
Everything I thought of sounded stupid and juvenile.
But there was something I wanted to ask him.
“Adam?” I called, and he turned around, smiling a little.
“What’s up?”
“What...what are we doing here?” I asked.
“What do you mean?” He looked at me blankly and I sighed, tugging at my shirt and looking away.
“I mean, what is this? Us?” I asked more softly, looking back up at him.
Adam grimaced. That was the only way to describe the expression on his face.
“We’re having a good time, aren’t we?”
“Sure, but?—”
He cut me off, putting a finger to my lips. “I don’t like to label things.”
I pulled away. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Adam sighed, running a hand through his hair, his expression going blank again. Cold.
“I’m sorry if I made you think this was something more.”
“What do you mean, something more?” I asked, fighting tears. I wasn’t sad, not exactly. More like angry. I felt like Adam was the puppet master, pulling at all of my heartstrings, talking me into coming back when I’d already written him off.
“You know what I mean,” he hedged.
“There’s obviouslysomethingbetween us,” I argued.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said quietly. “So maybe we shouldn’t do this again.”
I stared at him, anger rising in me and making my blood run hot.
“You talked me into coming over here, told me the truth about the inheritance and your relationship with Toby, just so you could fuck me and run?”
“It’s not like that, Katie,” he said, looking away.
