It couldn’t be, not after such a short amount of time, especially not after what just happened. But my heart break had to mean I felt some strong emotion for him.

I’d definitely felt drawn to him from the moment I met him. Seeing him again unexpectedly a few years later made methink there could be something between us, and that had only intensified as we spent more time together.

If love at first sight was real, then maybe that was what I felt for Adam though he obviously didn’t feel it for me.

I groaned and rolled over in bed, looking at my phone. I hoped to see a text from Adam but instead, it was Addie, asking how it went.

I called her instead of texting her back.

“So either it went well orreallywell,” Addie said. “It’s been hours.”

“Sorry to keep you hanging,” I said hoarsely, and Addie went silent for a second.

“You’ve been crying. What’d he do?”

I let out a shaky sigh. “It’s more what he didn’t do, Addie. We had sex again, amazing sex, but then he just... he just got up and left.”

“Well, did you ask him about it?”

“Of course I did. I asked him what we were and he said we were just having fun but when I pushed back he went all cold and told me that we shouldn’t do this anymore.”

“He broke it off with you? After talking you into going back?” Addie sounded furious.

I smiled, liking how protective she was of me. “Yeah,” I said softly. “It sucks, but I guess I just need to stay away from men.”

“You need to stay away fromLanphiermen,” she said, and I snorted out a laugh.

“That’s for sure. Even Colin talked me into playing with him for an hour.”

“Teaching them young,” she cracked, and I laughed again, sniffling and wiping my face.

“Thanks, Addie. I feel a little better.”

“Good. Forget that jerk. Do you want me to come over with ice cream and vodka?”

I looked at the clock. “No, you better not. I’ve got work tomorrow.”

“Come on, Katie. When something like this happens, you need booze and chocolate.”

I laughed. “Okay, bring it over.”

I only had a couple of drinks but plenty of chocolate ice cream, and by the end of the night, I did feel a bit better.

“Fuck Adam Lanphier,” I said, while we watched horror movies to keep my mind off romance.

“Fuck Adam,” she agreed. “And Toby.”

“And all men,” I said flatly.

“Not all men,” Addie pouted. “They can’t all be bad.”

“It’s not looking good.”

“We have to have faith, Katie! We can find a good man.”

I snorted. “You sound like my mother.”

“She’s a lovely, smart lady,” Addie said, sipping on her fourth drink. She started to hiccup.
