And that was when I hit him. I punched him right in his lying face and he yelped, holding a hand over his nose as it spurted blood.

It flowed down his face and onto his shirt. I hit him again as he came at me, punching him in the ribs and he ended up on the ground, beneath me. I punched him again in the stomach, taking his breath.

That’s when I heard Katie cry out.

He was lying there, gasping for air, when Katie pulled me off him.

“That’s enough,” she said quietly, and I was breathing hard, my chest heaving.

“You’ll never get another red cent from me, you fucker,” I whispered, and spat in his bleeding face. “Good luck paying the taxes on this place because I’ll never write you another check.”

Toby gasped for air and Rachel finally ran out onto the porch wearing a robe. She went to Toby immediately, yelling something about what an asshole I was.

I didn’t care. I took Katie’s hand and pulled her back to her car, full of adrenaline and righteous anger at my asshole brother.

Katie got in the car, breathing hard. She slammed her hands against the steering wheel.

“Ah, Katie?” I whispered, looking at her. “Are you okay?”

I winced, waiting for her to yell at me, to tell me they were probably going to call the cops and that I was stupid for taking her there, but instead, she just yelled out.

“That bastard!” she cried. “He could have ruined everything!”

She took off, her tires squealing, and I swallowed, holding on to the door handle.

“Katie, calm down,” I pleaded, a little afraid for my life because of the way she was driving. "We don’t want to get killed."

Katie took a deep breath as she slowed down and I relaxed slightly.

“He lied to me about everything,” she said again.

“I’m sorry,” I told her. “And not just about Toby. I’m sorry that I never let you in. You were right, I was distant. I knew I was falling and I tried to stop it, but I can’t anymore.”

Katie gasped and pulled off the road. I thought it was because she was going to talk to me about us, tell me that she believed me, and that she loved me.

“Adam, something’s wrong,” she gasped, holding the swell of her belly. I put my hand on her stomach and my heart leapt into my throat.

“I’m calling an ambulance,” I told her, taking out my phone, and she didn’t object, just nodded, holding her stomach, her face pale. My heart was about to beat out of my chest as I told the 911 operator what was going on and called for a tow to take Katie’s car back to her house.

I waited with her next to the car, kneeling next to her and holding her hands. There was a hint of morning light and the first birds were singing their good morning song, mist settling on the wet grass.

“It’s going to be okay,” I told her in a calm voice, even though I didn’t feel calm at all. “The babies will be okay.”

They had to be. If my actions caused Katie to lose the babies, I’d never forgive myself.

Chapter 25

Katie

Isat in the emergency waiting room for only half an hour before Adam made a scene.

Even for a private hospital, it was booming with patients and there were people sitting all over the lobby in various states of distress. It looked more like a madhouse than a hospital, so I could understand the wait.

Adam, on the other hand, couldn’t.

His handsome face was red, his brow furrowed as he all but yelled at the nurses.

“She’s pregnant with twins, only seven months. You’ve got to get a doctor out hereright now.”
