“Well, then I’m sorry, too,” I said, tears burning at the backs of my eyes at his sweet words. “I pushed you away. I tested you, compared you to Toby.”

“We both made mistakes,” he agreed. “But I just wanted to say that I never thought of you as an afterthought, even though I may have made it seem that way. I was just afraid of what I felt for you.”

“And I never really compared you to Toby,” I told him. “It was just because of how much he’d hurt me.”

Adam squeezed me tighter, kissing my forehead. “I know, baby. I understand.”

“And I understand why you did what you did. We’re all good, honey,” I assured him, cupping his face with my hands and kissing him softly.

Adam trailed his fingers along the bottom of my breast to my hip bone and I groaned.

“I might be too tired for sex,” I warned him.

“Me, too,” he agreed. “I just like touching you.”

I kissed him again, but his eyes were drifting closed.

“Adam?” He opened one eye. “I have something else I need to talk to you about,” I said.

“Tonight?” he whined, and I laughed, finding him cute.

“Yes,” I said, and he sat up slightly, leaning against the headboard.

“What’s that?”

“You remember our honeymoon?” I asked, trailing my fingers down his chest.

He scoffed. “Of course I remember our honeymoon. I remember the way you did that new thing with your tongue?—”

“Not that!” I exclaimed, laughing.

“Then what?” he asked.

“I was going to surprise you later, but I can’t keep it a secret anymore.”

Adam searched my face. “So it’s a good secret?”

I hit him lightly. “All of the secrets that I keep from you are good ones.”

His face relaxed. “Okay, then what is it? Don’t keep me in suspense, princess,” he teased.

“Well, you remember on our honeymoon when I said four is a good number?”

Adam looked toward the ceiling, thinking, and then his gaze shot to mine. “Katie, are you?—”

“I’m pregnant,” I whispered, and Adam stared at me blankly for a few moments, making me worry that maybe he wasn’t happy at the news.

Then he crushed me in his arms, kissing along my face. Suddenly, he paused.

“Four, not five, right?” he asked, and I burst out laughing.

“Just one baby, this time,” I assured him, and he kissed me deeply, thoroughly.

“Four is the perfect amount of kids,” he said.

“I thought you’d have a dozen,” I teased him.

Adam looked shocked. “Do you really want that many kids?”

“God, no!” I exclaimed, and he kissed me again, as if relieved.

“Then four is the perfect number,” he mumbled against my mouth.

I fell asleep easily after that, cradled in his arms.

I had everything I had ever wanted, and more.

THE END
