She studied it. “That’s why you never wear shorts, isn’t it?”

What was happening right now? He’d told himself not to go into the bedroom, he’d braced himself for a lonely night on thecouch, and now, out of nowhere, she’d come back? What was he supposed to do with that?

“Did you need something?” he managed.

Hayley looked up, startled. “No. Just didn’t want to hold your toothbrush hostage.”

His toothbrush. Of course. He hadn’t realized he’d been hoping for something else until all that hope turned to embarrassment. “Sure,” he said. “Thanks.”

Moments later, he was spitting toothpaste into the sink.

“You’re going to sleep in that?” Hayley was perched on the side of the bed as he walked out of the bathroom.

“That was the plan,” he said.

“Do you normally sleep in that?”

“Well …”

She rolled her eyes. “Get dressed, Freeman.”

“It’d be easier just to—”

“I’m not going to keep you from being comfortable. Get dressed. I’m going to go find the M&Ms.”

Hayley headed for the hall, muttering to herself. Nick was taking off his shoes when she yelled loud enough to be heard through the closed door of the bedroom.

“Why the hell did you put them away?”

Nick smiled.

It wasn’t long before he was dressed in pajama pants and a T-shirt. Hayley knocked on the door, and he stood up as he told her to come in.

“Is there anything else you think I need to do?” he teased.

She shifted her weight from foot to foot in the doorway. “Actually,” she said, “I was thinking we could share the bed.”

He blinked. “Share the bed.”

“Uh-huh.”

Something was off. Hayley was tentative, not seductive, and there was a slight tremble in her hand as it hung by her side.

He said, “You’re going to have to be more specific.”

“No sex,” she blurted.

He raised his eyebrows. “No sex.”

“No kissing, no sex. Just sleeping together.”

“And when you say sleeping together, you literally mean—”

“I thought you wouldn’t want to be alone.”

He squinted at her. “What?”

Hayley looked like she wanted to strangle him. “You hurt your knee. And the bed is big enough for both of us and more comfortable than the couch, and I just thought … You know what? Forget it. Horrible idea.”
