His fingers teased along the edge of my trousers, casting shivers along my belly. His thumb dipped into my waistband and my back arched, waiting for his hand to travel lower. I looked down and was met with a wicked grin as Riven unbuttoned my pants without moving his eyes from me. His fingers skirted along the edge of the fabric, taunting me. I shivered. He did it again.

“Please,” I begged. Riven’s smile widened, and his hand plunged between my legs. He snarled against my neck at the slickness he felt, his fangs scratching against my skin.

He licked my nipple as his fingers pressed against me, releasing a wave of tension. I tugged the hair at Riven’s neck, pulling him tighter against my chest. His fingers teased me, brushing against my skin everywhere except for the one place I wanted.

Riven tugged at my nipple with his teeth just as he pressed against that untouched spot. My moan echoed off the cavern walls. I shifted my hips. He flicked his thumb and I arched against the touch. I felt the weight of Riven’s stare on my skin as he played with me, building the need between my thighs.

“More,” I pleaded in a ragged breath. I gripped Riven’s shoulders and ground against his hand. Riven swore. He slid a finger into me and groaned at the wetness he found waiting for him.

He plunged his finger in and out of me. Hard strokes that stole my breath. Riven pulled me to him, filling my lungs with his hungry kisses. I rocked my hips against him, quickening the speed. Riven matched the tempo and slid a second finger into my core.

I gasped. I couldn’t focus on anything but the tightness. The scent of dew and birch that wrapped around me as Riven pushed me closer to the edge. My eyes fluttered and I saw him watching me. His eyes locked on my hips, unable to look away from where our bodies joined.

My thighs tightened and I pressed against the hardness at his thigh. “Fuck,” Riven coughed. His eyes cut to mine. “Keera,” he sighed. My name on his lips was a release. I cried out his name in return, clutching him against me as waves of pleasure rocketed through my limbs. Riven caught my moans with his lips, calming the climax with each kiss.

“Beautiful,” he whispered against my cheek.

I moved my hand to the hardness I felt but Riven grabbed my wrist and shook his head. He lowered us against the mattress. My brows furrowed as he laid a kiss between them.

“We don’t need to go any further,” he said, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “I’m in no rush, Keera.”

“But I want—”

“Oh, I know.” Riven grinned, kissing my wrist before letting it go. I inched forward, trying to pull his mouth back to mine. “I’m serious, Keera.” He laughed. “Iwantyou. More than I care to breathe. But when that day comes, I don’t want it to be rushed or in a cave. I want hours, days, to coax my name from your lips again and again. I don’t want the weight of tomorrow’s goodbye between us or the weight of...” He bit his lip, his eyes flicking down for a moment.

“When we share that with each other, Keera, I want there to be nothing pressing in against us. Nothing but you and me,” he said, his eyes swimming with resolve. I could see the weight of what we’d done, what we still would do, on his face. The strain it took to keep his fear in check.

I pressed my hand to his cheek and nodded. Riven pulled me against his chest and stroked my hair. We lay there, tangled together beneath the faelight, memorizing the feel of each other. When the suns set, Riven braided my hair as I washed my face in the small basin. I went to bed with his tunic hanging at my knees, wrapped in the scent of him with his arms wrapped around my waist.

It was still dark when I opened my eyes, moonlight filtering through the entrance of the tiny cave. The only reason I woke at all was the coolness at my back. Riven was no longer sleeping beside me but packing his bag a few feet away.

“I know you said you needed to leave early, but it’s barely tomorrow,” I slurred, grabbing the pillow he was trying to pack.

“I need to get going if I hope to make it to the Rift.” Riven gave me a slow kiss and wrestled the pillow out of my hand.

“Do you need your tunic?” I asked coyly. I sat up and started sliding it off my body hoping it would entice him to stay for a little while longer.

“Keep it.” He pulled the hem down and grinned against my neck. “You can wait two weeks.” He nibbled at my ear, making me doubt that was true.

“You look better in it anyway,” he said, his eyes trailing down my bare legs.

“I do, don’t I?” I teased, biting my bottom lip. I looked down, scanning the length of my body, before looking up at him with a wide grin. I winked.

Riven shook his head, but there was laughter in his eyes. “You’ve been spending too much time with Nikolai, I think.” I shrugged. That was probably true.

I pulled him on top of me. I loved the weight of his body on mine, his warmth and scent. How had I lived so long without touching another this way? Now that I had it again, the thought of going without felt like living without water.

Riven’s large hands closed around my back and turned us on our sides. We just lay beside each other, bodies pressed together, while he gently stroked my back. His violet eyes were discerning as they watched me. I kissed his lips gently, and Riven pulled me closer to him.

His lips scorched mine, unable to get enough of my skin as he trailed his kisses down my neck and jaw. My fingers pulled at his hair beckoning him even closer. When he didn’t relent, I hooked a leg around his back and a soft moan escaped my lips.

Riven softened his bite. His thumb grazed over my cheek in a soft caress before he ended the kiss.

It was lovely, but it felt like goodbye.

“It’s only two weeks,” I said, echoing his words back at him. My skin already felt cold without his lips on me.

Riven’s eyes were hard, his jaw flexed. I could hear the gritting of his teeth as he looked down, away from my gaze.
