“Pulling you into the public eye could become a problem for you.”
“My truth won’t hurt me. I’ve already survived it. My truth won’t hurt my business. It would be the reverse. As for the media, my future brothers-in-law are cops, and Sean is over the top when it comes to protecting me.”
“Then you’re okay with this?”
“I’m okay with this,” she said.
“Enough said. Love you. Talk to you soon.”
“Love you, too.”
The call ended.
Her client came in, and her morning continued.
But Wolf was on a mission. He started going through his contacts until he found a journalist at theMiami Heraldwho he knew and trusted, and gave him a call. Might as well start at home.
The phone rang a couple of times, and then the call picked up.
“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! Wolf Outen! Is this you?”
Wolf grinned. Leave it to a wordsmith like Danvers to use International Civil Aviation Organization spellings instead of just blatantly saying, “What the fuck!”
“Yes, it’s me. I have a story. Do you want the scoop?”
“Does a bear ask for Charmin in the woods? What’s it about?”
“My daughter.”
There was a moment of silence. “I didn’t know you had a daughter.”
“Neither did I, up until a month or so ago.”
“Holy shit, Wolf. Where do we start?”
“At the beginning, which was nearly twenty-eight years ago. You’re going to need to record this. It’s a sad, long-ass story with a very happy ending.”
“Give me a sec,” Danvers said.
Wolf heard footsteps running away and then footsteps running back. Danvers was slightly breathless when he picked up.
“Are you giving this to anyone else?”
“Only you. Once the story runs, I’ll probably give comments to other papers, but that’s it.”
“Thank you for this, but why me?” Danvers asked.
“Because I trust you,” Wolf said.
Another moment of silence, as he heard Danvers clearing his throat.
“Thanks, man. I’m ready when you are.”
Wolf started talking, and when he finished, Danvers was in disbelief.
“This is… I can’t imagine how… Is she okay with all this coming out?”
