“Stop talking nonsense. You didn’t shoot me,” he said, and then he groaned.

She was on her knees now, pulling his arm out of the sleeve.

“Shit. That hurts.” Sean groaned.

“You’re bleeding away from me. Shut up. I need to put pressure on it.” But when she got his coat off and realized there was no exit wound, her focus shifted. “The bullet’s still in your shoulder. Lean forward for me, sweetheart. I need to put pressure on this.”

There was panic in her voice, but she was already folding up the sleeve of his coat and using it for a pressure pad. He winced, but didn’t argue. They could hear sirens. Help was coming, and Amalie’s breath was warm on his face. She was safe.

“You saved my life! How did you know?” she asked.

Pain was shooting from his shoulder to the top of his head now, but she was safe in his arms, and he was trying to focus on what she’d just said.

“I…uh… Sunlight reflected off something shiny above us. I thought,Rifle scope, and we ducked, but if your dad hadn’t sent that warning, we’d both likely be dead.”

“Is this over?”

He groaned. “I don’t know… I think…” Words left him. It was taking all of his strength now to keep from passing out.

“I’m so sorry. I love you, Sean. Please stay with me,” she kept saying, but her hands were shaking, and she was so scared she couldn’t think. All she could do for him was keep putting pressure on the wound.

And then all of a sudden, police cars came flying into the parking lot, with an ambulance behind them.

“They’re here, Sean! Help is here!” she cried.

Sean looked up, saw Chief Warren, and then Aaron and Yancy coming toward them on the run. The sky was beginning to spin. Amalie’s face kept morphing into the face of a stranger.

“Cavalry’s here. Don’t let them cut your hair,” he mumbled, and passed out.

Chapter 14

Sean woke up in the ER, calling Amalie’s name.

She appeared in the doorway, covered in his blood and flanked by six men he’d never seen before.

“I’m safe, Sean. Lie still.”

“Safe… Love you,” he mumbled, and passed out again.

“What’s happening?” Amalie asked.

“We’re prepping to take him to surgery,” the doctor said, eyeing her as well. “Is any of that your blood?”

“No. Please fix him. I’m not doing life without him again.”

“Miss Lincoln, we need to get out of the way.”

Amalie turned toward the voice and then blinked. It was the man from the parking lot.

“I’m Joe, remember?”

She nodded, vaguely remembering all six of the men conversing with the police, and it was only after she heard them talking to her father on the phone that she had let them take her to the ER. She leaned back, too shocked to cry. All she needed was to know Sean was going to be okay.

And now that she’d seen him and knew he was still alive, she let them lead her back to the lobby. People were staring, but she looked past them without thought. She could still feel Sean’s arms around her as they were falling and hear the frantic tone of his voice.Get down!

Once she was seated, the men posted themselves around her like sentries. She looked down at her hands and the front of her coat and felt like throwing up. She was covered in blood, and police were everywhere—outside the ER entrance and inside the lobby. And then she saw Aaron and Wiley heading straight for her.

“Sean’s brothers,” she said, and the men stepped back.
