Bloody water was circling the drain.

Sean’s blood.

Her blood.

Mingling again, like when they were nine.

Her clothes were still bloody, but there was nothing left on her skin, and by the time they left the ladies room, there was a small line of women waiting to get in.

“Sorry. Medical emergency,” Shirley said, and headed back to the lobby, only to be met by no less than twenty more family members who’d arrived while they were gone.

After that, Amalie was swept up into a conclave of family. By the time the surgeon came out to let the family know Sean was in recovery and doing well, she was on a first-name basis with all of them.

Stinger, a.k.a. Darla Rae Compton, was dead.

The feds ran her name through the system to see who they were dealing with and were not surprised.

Ex-military. Dishonorable discharge. Rap sheet with a multitude of offenses.

And because she’d just failed her last mission, she was never going to spend the fifty thousand Mary Ingalls hadtransferred into her account. But her failure was the last nail in Fiona Rangely’s coffin.

Wolf was alive.

His daughter was alive.

And Fiona’s reign of terror had come to an end.

She was arrested and charged on two counts of murder, two counts of soliciting a murder, and one count of conspiracy to murder, and she had not a leg to stand on. Her only goal now was being sentenced to life in prison and not the death penalty.

The irony? That her plan blew up in her face when the refinery blew up in Sao Paulo. But Fiona wasn’t laughing. She wasn’t saying much of anything. Just waiting for her new criminal attorney to arrive.

The moment Wolf got the news from his security team, his heart sank. His in-laws had cheated him of watching his daughter grow up, and his wife had come far too close to killing her. The entire span of his daughter’s misfortune had come through her connection to him, and he felt sick, but there was no time to wallow in his own regret and misery. He needed to make sure Fiona was truly out of circulation before he went after the people who’d stolen his daughter.

After a phone call to Ramsey to affirm that, he contacted his team to stay on the job until he’d had a chance to confront Fiona. He wasn’t a man who backed away from the enemy, and she’d become his worst.

But all of this upheaval changed his plans to go straight to Jubilee. He was no longer certain of his welcome, had no idea where Amalie was and what was happening to Sean, and didn’t know if she was even in a place where she could take a call, so he sent a text instead.

My darling daughter. I have just learned of what has happened. There are no words to express how deeply sorry I am. I thought I had done enough to keep you safe until Fiona was arrested, but I…we all…underestimated her. She’d already ordered the hit before she was arrested, and her decision to hire a woman was a move we never saw coming. I have been told your Sean was sent to surgery. I pray it is successful. I cannot take away the horror and fear you both experienced. All I can say again is how sorry I am, and hope that you are still willing to meet me. I want to be a part of your life, no matter how big or how small. I never knew you existed, and now you’re everything to me. I’m on my way to Miami to sign some paperwork and have a face-to-face with the devil I married. Rising from the dead is more complicated than I had imagined. Please let me know if I may come see you, as we had planned.

With so much love,

Your dad

Sean’s surgery was swift. No surprises. No broken bones, and one bullet less in his body than when he went in, and pumped full of pain meds when they took him to his room.

“Where’s my girl? Where’s Amalie? I need to see my girl,” he kept saying.

Finally, one of the nurses who was helping get him settled started laughing.

“She’s with your mother, half of the population of Pope Mountain, and a bunch of men who look like soldiers. She’s safe. Trust me.”

“Can’t trust you. Don’t know your name,” he mumbled.

She smiled. “ Linette Elgin, but everyone calls me Linnie, at your service.”

“Nurse Linnie, I wanna see my girl. Get Mom. She’ll bring her.”

“In a few minutes, okay?”
