I’m heading your way today and checking in at Hotel Devon. Will you be free for dinner around 7:00 p.m.? I’ll order it in my suite so we can talk in private, if that’s okay with you. I know you must have a million questions. I hope I have the answers you need. Oh…if you are free…fish, chicken, or steak?

Her heart skipped. Finally!

Yes! Perfect! And chicken, please.

Then she made a quick call to Sean, and shivered at the sound of his voice in her ear.

“Hey, darlin’. How’s my girl?”

“Good. My dad is finally coming to Jubilee. I’m meeting him for dinner in his suite tonight at Hotel Devon. Just wanted you to know where I’ll be, and I’ll text you when I get home.”

Sean smiled. “That’s awesome, and thanks for letting me know.”

“I’m still not used to having someone who cares where I am, but never assume I don’t appreciate the backup,” she said. “Are you having a good day today?”

“Yes, now that I’ve heard your voice, and just so you don’t forget, I love you forever,” he said.

“Love you more, and if it’s not too late when I get home, I’ll call to say good night,” she said.

“It’s never too late to call me. I’m your guy.”

The words were still echoing in her heart when she disconnected, and after that, her day flew past. She locked up at six o’clock on the dot, hurried home to shower and change, and was out the door and on her way to Hotel Devon with a small photo album of her life and fifteen minutes to spare.

Chapter 15

Wolf’s chopper set down in Jubilee midafternoon. His arrival at Hotel Devon was more than he’d expected, but filled him with delight. They had literally rolled out a red carpet. A bellhop took his bags, and Michael Devon was waiting to personally escort him to the suite he’d reserved.

“I’m a little late for the board meeting,” Wolf said.

Michael shook his head. “I saw the explosion from the fourth-floor windows. I thought I watched you die. My deepest sympathies for the loss of your friend and your pilot. I cannot imagine what you’ve been going through, but your suite awaits, and your stay is on the house. Follow me.”

Wolf followed as Michael led him to a separate elevator and swiped a card to open the doors.

“I have a favor to ask,” Wolf said, as they entered the car.

“Anything,” Michael said.

“My daughter, Amalie Lincoln, will be joining me for dinner tonight around seven. Would you please have someone meet her at the entrance and escort her up to this suite?”

“I’ll do it myself, and it will be an honor. I met her at her open house. She is both beautiful and delightful,” Michael said.

Wolf sighed. “Thank you. Thank you for everything.”

Michael nodded. The elevator stopped. The doors opened out into a small foyer facing a door labeled Presidential Suite. He swiped the card, then opened the door for Wolf.

“Enjoy your stay, and if you need anything, all you have to do is call the concierge. They have been notified of your presence. The chef awaits your menu tonight, and there will be a bottle of our best champagne with your meal.”

“Thank you,” Wolf said.

“You are most welcome,” Michael said, then handed Wolf the key card and left him on his own.

Wolf’s luggage was on his bed. The mini fridge was stocked full of every imaginable treat. The view from his window was Pope Mountain in all of its majesty. He’d seen it countless times before, but today it held special meaning. His child lived beneath its shadows now.

“Protect her when I cannot,” he whispered, then turned away and began to unpack. The carefully wrapped present he’d brought for his daughter was still intact. It was his first gift to her, and he hadn’t thought twice about what it would be.

As soon as he had finished, he called the chef about the menu, thanking him profusely for his help in making this meal special.

Now all he had to do was wait for her to knock on his door. He’d only seen her face and heard her voice. He didn’t know if she was short or tall, what made her laugh, and what burdens she’d borne alone. But he would before this night was over. He wanted to know all about her Sean, and what had made him so special in her eyes. Why she’d chosen him would say a lot about what she valued in life.
