Trill. Trill. Trill.

She looked down and pulled her phone out of her pocket. “It’s Harper. I better take it.”

He nodded.

“Hey, Harp. What’s up? Uh-huh. Okay.” She held her hand over the receiver. “I’m going to take this in the house, if that’s okay.”

“Of course.”

He watched her walk away.

¦¦¦

“So what’s up with theuh-huh?” Harper asked as Andi entered Christian’s bedroom where she’d slept and shut the door behind her.

“Shhh. Hold on.”

“Oooh. So this is going to be something good,” Harper said, keen interest echoing in her tone.

Try very bad. Her chest squeezed. She never saw that coming, and her flight instinct was screamingrun. She exhaled, wondering whathewas feeling as how she reacted raced through her mind.

“Are you there?” Harper said.

“Yeah.” She sat on the bed, her knees bent, clutching a pillow tight to her chest.

“For goodness’ sake,” Harper said. “What happened? Are you okay?”

“Yes. No. I don’t know.”

“What’s going on?”

“Christian told me something, and I don’t know how to handleit.” She raked a hand through her hair, the smell of the fire from the pit clinging to it.

“Okay...”

“I want to tell you, but ... I also want to respect his privacy.” He’d opened up to her in confidence.

“So leave out the details. Just go big picture.”

How did she do that? “I...”

“You?” Harper said, before taking a sip of something.

Andi exhaled. “Okay,” she said, trying to think big picture only and not get lost in the weeds. “He did something in his past. Let’s just say he...”

“Wore Mickey ears?” Harper proposed.

“What?” She laughed in spite of herself. Leave it to Harper to defuse a tense situation with something so out of the blue.

“Will that work?” Harper asked, then crunching sounded over the line.

“What are you eating?”

“Cracker Jacks. Sorry. I’ll wait until we’re done.”

“No. It’s fine, but you only eat those when you’re stressed. So what’s up?”

“Just trying to find the right line with Deckard,” she admitted.
