I saw her walk into a basement, making as little sound as possible. There seemed to be a few people in there, and based on their figure and their disposition around the narrow space, I was betting they were the women we were looking for.

One of them spotted Mia and was ready to exclaim in fear, so Mia acted fast, placing her small hand over the woman’s mouth, yet talking softly so as not to disturb or scare them more. “Shh. It’s okay. I’m not here to hurt you. But I need you not to scream. Can I count on you for that?” After a while, Mia continued. “I’m going to take my hoodie off so you can look at me and see I’m not a threat. Then we’re getting out of here. I have two friends outside who are helping us. I need you to come with me fast, okay?”

I heard a rushed sound as Mia presented herself, then went back to work, helping the women get up. Some of them were limping, others were walking favoring one of her sides, confirming our suspicions that they were being hurt—and worse—in that hellhole.

“Danny, we’re coming to you.”

“I’m ready.” I ran closer to where Mia got in and met her leading the girls out. As I saw each one of their faces, I could only call them girls. I was certain not one of them was overage, and my rage grew to an unspeakable level.

“Fuck. They know something is going on,” Ben alerted us. “I’m getting closer to you, but you guys need to act fast.”

Mia and I were helping them out of the building when one of the girls grabbed Mia’s arm. “You need to get my sister.”

“What sister? Where is she?”

“My sister was taken before me, she’s in a room alone here.” The girl sobbed in desperation. “She was...she’s been...you need to get her out.”

“Guys, we need to run. They’re closing in.”

Ignoring Ben, Mia questioned, “Do you know where she is?”

The girl nodded. “In the room beside where we were. They wanted me to listen,” she whispered.

I wanted to kill them all with my bare hands. Then shoot them just to make sure.

“What is taking you so long? We need to get back.”

Mia gazed at me, and I knew there was no talking her out of it. I didn’t want to anyway. “I’ll take them and come back for you. Be fast and stay safe.” She ran back inside that hell, and I guided the girls to Ben so we could get them out. “Mia had to go inside.”

“What the fuck? Does she have a death wish? We don’t have time; they’re running to the storage.”

I picked up two of the girls who were limping and ran with the others until we found Ben.

“We found out there was another girl inside, she was taken before these. Get them to the truck, I’m going back to cover Mia.”

“You can’t do it alone.”

“Neither can she. We need to get them out, so lead them and don’t look back for us, they need protection. Mia and I will get to you.”

“I don’t like this. It could be a trap, and Mia is walking right into it.”

“Even if that’s the case, we need to trust her on this. Now go.” I turned to the girls. “You need to follow him. Donotrun away from him. Stick together and do as he tells you.” I looked for the one who talked to Mia. “We’re bringing your sister back.” We heard gunfire. “Fuck. Go, Ben. I’ll be back in a few.”

I ran back, thankful for my big legs. I tried to be hidden by the shadows, but it wasn’t my priority. Our presence was already compromised, and staying hidden wasn’t in my plans anymore.

“Mia, where are you?” There was no answer. “Mia, can you hear me?” Still nothing, but I could hear the shooting. “Damn it, Mia, answer me!”

“I found her. Damn, it’s bad. She’ll need medical assistance ASAP.” She panted through the radio, “I hate it when they fire back. They’re surrounding the space; it’s getting harder to leave this nightmare.”

“Stay put. I’m getting closer, we can create an offensive and get you both out.”

“Fuck,” Ben exclaimed. “I got a runner. The sister is running.”

“For the love of God, we don’t need that right now. It’s okay, sweetie,” her voice turned soft, “nothing to worry about, we’re getting you out of here.”

“Ben, don’t go after her. Keep guiding the girls to the truck and wait for us. We’ll get out and look for her.” I hoped we could accomplish that, but it was getting hard to believe we could get out of that one unscathed.

I was rounding the building when I spotted four of them surrounding the space. My position was advantageous, so I shot them. The plan was to leave them alive so they could pay for what they did. But I was past the point of seeking justice from the legal system. I had to act fast.
