We heard a noise from outside, and I opened our security feed. “He’s here.”

She jumped off her seat to look at the images with Ben over my shoulder.

“We need to behave,” Aaron stressed.

“I resent the implication that we wouldn’t be our best selves to a helping savior,” Mia retorted in mock offense.

She only said that because she hadn’t seen the man in question yet—the fifty-something, bright-checkered-green-suit-white-shoes-wearing man who got out of a black car, boasting a yellow (not blonde) toupee.

“Doooong, I mean, daaaang,” Ben joked, making me guffaw.

“I think we have a wiener—I mean, a winner,” Mia said, then burst out laughing along with me and Ben.

“When was I assigned to have three children?” Aaron mumbled, rubbing his forehead, with his eyes closed.

“Pretty nuts, right?” I offered, and we kept laughing until Mia stopped abruptly and reprimanded me.

“Show some respect, Daniel.”

“This is a place of business,” Ben scolded.

“If I had my pearls, I’d be clutching them right now,” she sneered, with her hand on her throat.

“You’re a father,” Ben reminded me.

“Shame.”

“Shame.”

I looked at Aaron for guidance. “What just happened?”

“See what you created?”

Mia and Ben kept shaking their heads at me until she cackled again in appreciation, “‘Pretty nuts.’Aiai, pretty nuts.” She rubbed away her laughing tears. “You guys are so unprofessional.”

“Ben is right. You’re a little shit.” Mia chuckled at my venomless words and tapped my arm.

“But you all love me. You wouldn’t function without my amazing self.”

“Now, please—” Aaron stressed.

“Oh, come on, Scottie. We know how to do our jobs,” she placated him, right before she added, “Now, you go grab that dick for us.”

We stood up to greet the man, and I gave mental props to Mia for not making any jokes. His name was unfortunate, but he seemed like a nice guy.

“Thank you again for this, Mr. Bonner.”

He waved his hand at Aaron. “Don’t worry about it. Anything for Ariel. She told me this was important for you, hence it was important to her, which made it important to me. She’s a very honest lady, so I knew this should be done.” A small smile shadowed Aaron’s lips at the mention of Ariel before he could school his features. “Now, I understand I’m supposed to send you the results?”

“Not exactly.” Aaron fished a pen drive from the inside pocket of his coat. “Could I? I don’t want any trails leading to you, so it’s better than you sending it to me by email or something like that.”

“Sure, go ahead.” The man stepped back and let Aaron collect the evidence he’d provided.

Once it was done, Aaron gripped the drive and turned toDick. “I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done.”

“We all appreciate it,” I agreed.

He nodded solemnly. “I know it’s private, but Ariel shared with me something about what you guys do. I knew I should do my part for it. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call me.”
