Ryder?Jessie said plaintively.Where are you?

Right here, babe,he assured her.Feel me? Feel that energy loop? We’ve still got it going, can you feel it? Energy, dominance, what’s yours is mine, and mine is yours.

Forever, amen,Jessie said with amusement.

Forever, amen,Ryder agreed. It felt like a vow.

Someone opened the back hatch of the SUV and grabbed him like he was a baby. “Careful,” Titus warned. “Don’t break open that bullet wound.”

No, he thought, that won’t do. “Benny?” he croaked out.

“He’s on his way,” Titus said. “Knowing him he’s coming down like a bat out of hell.”

Probably letting his wolf steer again, he thought with amusement, but he didn’t have the energy to get the words out.

He what?Jessie demanded. He lets his wolf steer?

He does,Ryder said. He clenched his teeth. Being carried like this wasn’t as smooth a trip as he would have thought. They trade off on highways.

Jessie giggled a bit. I’ll have to try that, she said dreamily. So many things I still want to do, Ryder.

And you’re going to do every one of them,he promised her, his heart breaking a bit. She thought she was dying.

Promise me you’ll live? Even if I don’t make it? That poison is nasty stuff.

Jessie Nickerson, you listen to me,Ryder ordered, in a panic now. You’re going to live, you hear me! None of this shit about not making it. And if you don’t make it, you don’t get any say in what I do. So suck it up. Because if you want me to live, you’ve got to fight to live yourself.

Ryder conceded he might not be making all that much sense.

“Titus says get them close together, touching,” the man who was carrying him said.

“We’ve got one patient, and that’s all that we can deal with right now,” Dennis snapped.

We? Ryder thought. Oh, Michel must be there too. Well that was good. Wasn’t it? Ryder opened his eyes a bit. “Mates,” he croaked. “Need skin to skin.”

“Fine,” Dennis muttered. And someone carefully laid Ryder next to Jessie. He reached out, searching for her hand. As soon as he touched her, it was if someone had turned the lights on. He felt better. Things were clearer in his head. Whoa, he thought, amazed.

You there, girl?he asked.Because touching you jazzed me right up.

There was no response.Jessie?he said, alarmed.

“Jessie!” he screamed.

“Knock him out,” someone ordered. “Knock them both out. Damn it! Where’s Benny Garrison when you need him?”

***

Benny-man took overthe motorcycle when they hit the city limits. He realized this might have been a bit foolhardy —he didn’t have a helmet on, his passenger had his — and he thought his passenger might be freaking out based on how tight he was clutching Benny’s waist.

Tough, Benny thought. He took the cutoff that they’d taken last night coming home from the pack house. He had this urgent feeling he had to get back to Wolf’s Head as quickly as he could.

Friend-mate, his wolf agreed. Brother. Need us now.

Benny frowned. What? Was his wolf naming Jessie a friend-mate?

His wolf flashed images: Jessie, Ryder, Wolf’s Head. It felt like his wolf was impatient with him for not understanding.

Are you linked to Jessie or Ryder? he demanded of his wolf. His wolf felt amused. Damn it! Do you know what’s going on there? Benny slowed down to just a bit over the speed limit. Damned kilometers anyway. How did he know what 5 miles over translated into? Did Canada even have an unwritten rule like the U.S. did?
