“She is,” his father said, with a smile. “She’s with her daughters, and all the girls we sent here. Good job there, by the way. The girls are doing better than Nadia expected.”

Benny wasn’t sure what that meant, but he let it go. Did she mean her daughters? Or the girls from Southeast Asia? Well, they were all scary as hell, her daughters most of all. But they were doing well. He felt a moment of pride in that.

“And I see Haile’s girls made it in,” his father continued.

“Yeah, Cujo thought you might be behind that,” Benny said sourly.

His father smiled, but he didn’t confirm or deny it.

Of course not. This man had been running CIA covert ops since before Vietnam. Probably since the CIA started.

“Where have you been?” Benny blurted out. “Your pack needed you! That whole region almost went up in flames, Dad. Where were you?”

“Trying to prevent a shifter global civil war,” his father replied grimly. He turned to walk up the sand toward the lodge.

“And did you?” Benny asked, falling into step with him.

“No,” his father said with a sigh. “I may have made it worse. I thought it would happen in Asia. The SE Asia Council and the China Council were about to go to war and drag the rest of Asia into it. So we worked feverishly to get the girls out of there —get them to the serum, to the school — to sanctuary, where they’d be safe. We cannot afford to lose another generation of girls.”

Benny nodded. “I would agree with that analysis. So?”

“So the battleground has shifted,” his father said. “It’s coming here, to Seattle, when the World Council meets.”

Benny stared at the man. “That’s in six days!”

Tom Garrison nodded. “It is,” he said. “And instead of a sanctuary, I’ve sent these girls to the epicenter of the battle ahead. So here I am. And Nadia is with me. And we will defend the girls against all comers. No matter who they are.”

Benny closed his eyes. His girls? The bright, lively, wonderful students attending his school? “Tell me,” he said simply. “What do we need to do?”

And his father began to talk.
