Derrick had been spending so much time with Malcolm and Paula, he had his suit for the Valentine's Day dance delivered to the apartment. That meant that he and Malcolm were now getting ready together. "Husbands would get ready like this," Derrick pointed out startling Malcolm, but he had to admit he liked the feeling of it. Why would Derrick be bringing up husbands though?

The two of them also helped Paula get ready though Derrick arranged for a hairdresser to come by and do Paula's hair. Malcolm thought that was kind of crazy, but Paula had fun and ended up with a silk flower in her hair.

She looked so cute Malcolm couldn't stop taking pictures of her. "You can take more pictures at the dance," Derrick told him as he helped Paula twirl in her pink dress. Of course Malcolm had to get a video of that.

Derrick, Malcolm, and Paula arrive at the Valentine's Day event and headed down a lighted path toward an old mansion that loomed white against the night sky full of stars. It was all lit up and Paula exclaimed when she saw it. "It's a princess castle!"

The inside impressed her too. The place was decorated with white and red sprays of tiny roses and red and white crystal hearts. Paula's eyes lit up as she looked around in wonder.

Even Malcolm was overcome by the romantic mood, Valentine's Day was casting its spell on him. In the ballroom, music was playing and couples were already dancing. Malcolm looked forward to him and Derrick being among them.

Derrick introduced Malcolm to a couple who had brought their two daughters. They befriended Paula right away and showed her all the sweets on the buffet table. Less cheerfully, they toldher, "But we have to ask a grown up to give us the sweets." Now all three girls looked up at the adults with pleading eyes.

No one could resist that. While the little girls were eating little cakes, Derrick took Malcolm's hand. "Would you like to dance?" he asked.

"All night," Malcolm told him. He was just so happy to be spending Valentine's Day with him.

Going out onto the dance floor, they joined other couples swaying to a romantic melody. As they danced, Malcolm felt dazed with a wonderful feeling of being with Derrick, lost in his dark eyes as their bodies were pressed together, moving as one.

"I can't believe we're here," Malcolm said then he made a confession. "You know, I was never really into Valentine's Day before I met you. I just thought it was silly."

Derrick nodded and smiled. "I know what you mean. I felt the same way but now I get it. And that's because I love you, Malcolm."

Hearing those words, Malcolm was overjoyed and overcome. He could hardly breathe. He had to tell Derrick, "I love you too. I love you so much."

They kissed while the other couples danced around them, but Malcolm wished they were all alone.

They continued to dance and Paula waved to them. Derrick smiled at her and said, "She deserves a dance too."

She had been dancing with some other kids, but now Malcolm and Derrick went over to her. "Would you like to dance with us?" Malcolm asked.

Paula nodded and he swung her up into his arms. He held her for a few turns between him and Derrick. Then Derrick scooped her up in his arms. When he put her down, she twirled between them and looked up at them with a happy smile.

They took a break just as Mona arrived. She was going to be taking Paula with her so Malcolm and Derrick could continue their Valentine's night. After Paula said good night to her little friends, Derrick and Malcolm walked out with her and Mona. "I'll take good care of this precious thing. You two have fun."

Paula echoed that. "Have grown up fun!"

"We definitely will," Malcolm muttered and kissed her.

They waved to her as Mona drove away then they went back in to keep dancing. It was after midnight when Derrick said they should go and get some fresh air. They got their coats and then they took a walk down a winding garden path. The garden was lit softly and they found a quiet spot.

Not wasting any time, Malcolm reached out to kiss Derrick. He only got to kiss him for a little while before Derrick let him go as he went down on one knee in front of him and took his hand. "I'll understand if it's too soon, but I want you to know how I feel. I want to be with you forever. I want to marry you and be your husband more than anything. Do you want to be mine?"

Malcolm was so shocked, he couldn't even take a breath. He almost said it was too soon, but those words just wouldn't come out. He couldn't get any words out until he said what was in his heart. "Yes. I want that too. I want to be yours forever," he said and then had to wipe his eyes. He couldn't believe that he was crying. He couldn't believe that Derrick just proposed to him. "We're engaged," he gasped.

"Yes, we are," Derrick said and stood up so he could take Malcolm in his arms and kiss him until he was dizzy with joy.

The music from the ballroom reached them, muted but unmistakably romantic. It played over the sound of Malcolm's heart pounding. "We're really engaged?" he asked.

Derrick smiled at him and told him, "We're engaged, we're going to be married and we're going to be happy." He then heldMalcolm tight and buried his face against his neck. "I'm already so happy. Thank you for saying yes."

Time stood still for them as they basked in the moment, their arms around each other. "God, I love you. And when I look into the future, I see us being so happy," Derrick said, smiling.

"Oh, damn, Derrick," Malcolm whimpered and felt like his heart would burst from loving him so much. "I love you."

Arriving at Derrick's house, they couldn't keep their hands off each other. Then Derrick took too long unlocking the door, partly because of Malcolm who refused to stop kissing and groping him. They nearly ended up doing it on the front steps.

Panting and hungry for each other, they somehow made it upstairs to Derrick's bedroom. Derrick got Malcolm's suit jacket off and then pushed his hand down the back of Malcolm's pants. After making Malcolm groan, he moved his hand up, sliding it underneath his shirt to rub over his back and send shivers up and down his spine.
