Everything is quiet for a long ten seconds.

We wait, all three of us huddled around the phone, listening intently.

I’m expecting Sascha to start his preening, so when Antoinette croaks, “Why are you here?” her voice trembling with shock, I feel the world tilt for a flicker in time before righting itself again.

“I heard a rumor...” There’s a long pause. “That Sascha could cater to my moreprimitivetastes.”

Kane looks at me, his eyebrows creased in confusion.

“Nico Drakos,” I mumble, burying my hands in my hair.

“Fucking civilians.” Kane’s frustration mirrors my own. “What a shit show.”

“Are you fucking kidding me!” Lyla shouts. “You deserve a bullet!”

There’s a snigger.

“Sascha,” Mani whispers.

As if he’d been cued for his part, Sascha laughs again, louder this time. “I’ve gotta say, Toni, I was expecting you. But this…Thisis priceless. Your ex-lover…” Everyone is quiet. “Tell me,” Sascha begins, “is this girl’s pussy honey coated? Or just tighter than a nun’s?”

A full body rage overtakes me. My hands grip the desk in front of me, my knuckles turning white as the wood groans in protest. My vision wavers. My breathing, surprisingly, is slow and calm. Prying my hands off the table, I unstrap my gun and calmly check the mag. The second I have confirmation that Catherine’s there, we’re going in.

“Lizzie would be disgusted with you.” Antoinette’s voice is pure ice.

“No.” There is the sound of a chair scraping backwards. “She understood me!” Sascha screams.

“I’m five seconds away from walking out that door,” Drakos states calmly. “So, either we abandon this drama and get moving. Or the deal’s off.”

“Deal?” Antoinette asks.

Nico’s voice is filled with disdain. “It would seem I have a need for an available woman. And with the LAPD’s interest in this one, well, the price is right. She comes cheap.”

“And experienced,” Sascha adds.

A slap echoes in the stunned silence that follows.

“You pig,” Lyla spits, but she sounds as if she’s about to cry.

“I’ll pay more,” Antoinette says. She must turn to Sascha because she adds, “You know I’m good for it.”

“I’m sorry, Toni.” There is a laugh in Sascha’s voice. “It’s a done deal.”

Nobody speaks as doors open and close. After what feels like an eternity of silence, there is a slow creak and a thump, and I know…I know that Cat’s there.

Lyla whispers, “Oh, my God,” and starts crying. “Cat? Cat, wake up.”

“What did you do to her?” Toni’s voice is heavy with disgust.

The fucker laughs. “She was feeling feisty, so we gave her a littleliquid love.”

“I need specifics,” Nico says.

My stomach plummets. “We go in. Now.”

“No.” Kane shakes his head.

I turn slowly, not quite believing what I just heard. Kane looks apologetic but his green eyes are cold and calm. “We don’t have the warrant for what we just did. It’s inadmissible. Even if we could charge him on kidnapping, he’d walk in under ten.”
