I shrug, smiling slightly. “Anyone is capable of murder given the right circumstances, Mr. Flint.” I think about what I’ve told him. “Except for Jules, maybe.”

“Ms. Dorn?”

“Yes.”

“What makes you say that?”

“She’s the type of woman who leads a line of ants from the kitchen to outside with a trail of crumbs because she doesn’t want to use pesticide.”

“Is that a true story?”

“I only tell true stories.”

He grins unexpectedly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. It’s so disarming, that I catch myself blinking as I try to right the stunned look on my face.

“Okay.” Still smiling, he permits my response with a small nod.

“Are we done?” Joan asks.

“For now.” He turns to look at me. “There may be follow-up questions as the investigation continues.”

“You know where to find me.” The sentence sounds suggestive when it comes out of my mouth.

Aiden Flint’s eyes widen slightly.

“Ah, two-zero-four-five Clementine Lane.”Oh, God.

“Right.”He nods to Detective Sanchez, who stands and shows me to the door.

The moment I step outside, he calls Lyla. She brushes past me with a wicked smile and a wink.

God help us all.

Chapter 5

Aiden

“What do you think?”I ask Mani later that day.

He turns from where he’s been plugging the witness statements into the York Case’s Murder Book. “The little one did it.”

“Lyla Kaspar.” I think back on the petite blonde and the way she took off her jacket halfway through the interview to reveal a tiny bikini-like top. According to her, she’d been, ‘Too hot,’ but I doubt she’d been talking about the temperature of the room.

Joan Stark had almost had a stroke.

“She really hated Elizabeth York,” I affirm.

Mani picks up a piece of paper. I see Lyla’s picture on the front. I’m not sure how she got away with keeping the ID photo, but in it, she’s sticking the tip of her tongue out the corner of her mouth. “Her statement: ‘Elizabeth was a raving bitch and is probably sucking Satan’s cock right now’, was a little excessive, I thought.”

I don’t bother hiding my grin. “I gotta say, today might have been my most interesting day on the job in twenty years.”

Mani nods. “Can I writesmoke showin my report?”

“No.”

“How abouttotal babe?”

“No.”
