When I reach the room, I find her already waiting in the hall. Her attention is on the brick wall across from her. Lost in thought, she doesn’t even notice my approach.

I’m the worst for wanting to take advantage.

It’s not often I can take in her appearance without making her squirm. She hates her condition, I find her beautiful. If I ever told her the truth, she’d call me a liar.

The whole conversation has been played through my head before.

With her sunglasses already perched on her nose, I miss out on seeing the oddity of her eyes.

What is she thinking? If not different ways to escape, what other paths are there? Maybe she’s run into another hacking-related wall and is trying to think of a solution. She does that a lot.

Though, her cheeks are flushed. My chest tightens at that.

Even if I tell myself not to get jealous, the thought of Dario crossing her mind makes me crazy. He’s the only other person who’s spent time with her, more than I have.

I won’t kill those who help my family out. Not even to knock out any competition.

“Who are you thinking about?”

Veronica jumps at my voice and jerks to look up at me. Behind those glasses, I can’t read her eyes. There’s no doubt about it with the way her face morphs to shock.

I’ve caught her thinking aboutsomeone. With those flushed cheeks, I can already imaginewhy.

“You took your sweet time.” Avoiding my question like the plague, she hooks an arm around mine. “I thought you’d forgotten about me.”

“Never.” The word comes out automatically and her hold on my limb tightens.

With the ache of learning the answer to my question throbbing through my head, I try not to remind myself of all the methods I’ve learned over the years to get the information I want.

Most revolve around torture in pain. Veronica doesn’t fit that category. I’d want to make her experience the opposite to give me the answers I need. Unless I want the guests above to see my arousal, I can’t think further in detail about that.

She’s the one guiding me tonight. While the mental battle I normally fight is more intense than normal, she’s happy to be the one to get us out of the casino.

The fresh night air helps cool me down a bit.

With the sidewalk crowded with people, she props her glasses up on her head and puts all her attention on getting us home in one piece.

Home.To me, yes. But to her, I doubt it.

“Are you alright?”

The question comes once we’re alone in the elevator. Concern coats her voice and her eyes don’t hold back either. After propping the sunglasses on the top of her head, she looks at me with concern.

I should give her a smirk and reassure her everything is fine. Not much of the lying type, the only words that want to come out are those to express the jealousy coiling hot in my chest.

Without a word passing my lips, I’m hitting the emergency button. There’s nothing worse than the confused and innocent look she gives me when a low buzz of an alarm fills the small box.

I don’t want anyone disturbing us. Not while I’m not thinking straight.

“Dante?”

A gasp leaves her lips when I corner her. With red cheeks, she lifts her chin and tries her hardest to look brave. Unfortunately for her, she’s trapped in here with a hungry wolf.

“Answer my question from earlier.” Curling my fingers around the small bars at her back, I give her no path of escape. “Who were you thinking about?”

I’m risking everything here. After getting this woman to finally warm up to me, I’m about to throw all of that hard work away all because this hunger inside wants to remove whoever is a threat.

What in the world have I become?
