“Nicola threatened me into secrecy so I can’t say a word. Though, I have a feeling people will know soon enough.”Murmuring the last part, I watch her gasp at the chicken tenders inside.

She’s adorable.

I want to kiss her again. Even better, I want to taste her thoroughly this time and enjoy my form of a meal. With no cameras in here, I could dine in peace. If only.

“Are you going to get in trouble if you get caught in here with me?” Her brows come together as the thought crosses her mind. “I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

“I’ll be fine,” I promise. Even if it’s a few minutes shared with this beauty, I’m willing to risk whatever punishment Nicola sends my way. “Eat your lunch.”

Looking like she wants to pick a fight, she does as I say when I don’t budge.

Watching her take each bite, I fume silently to myself.

I don’t like Nicola threatening someone I care for to get his way, but it is not new. Whatever he wants, he’ll get. Veronica doesn’t have a reason to go against him. If she won’t tellme, she won’t tell anyone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nicola left behind a listening device as a test of faith. For all I know, he has no reason to stick around or return unless Veronica tries to go behind his back with whatever secretive information he feeds her.

What will he do if she succeeds? Will he trust her enough to brush away any thoughts of getting rid of her in the future?

I’ll convince him otherwise. All the evidence of her hard work is right in front of us.

All this time, Dario hasn’t mentioned a single issue since she’s taken a claim to our systems. Normally, I’d hear aboutsomethingcoming up at least once a week. The silence is nice and Nicola has to see it. He’s not blind.

“You shouldn’t do that,” Veronica says, distracting me momentarily.

“Dowhat?”

“Think so hard. Your face is going to get stuck in that position.” Crunching down on a piece of chicken, her eyes stay pointed in my direction. “Let some of it out. Your head is going to blow up too, especially with how much you’re thinking.”

Am Ithatreadable? Everyone is noticing something is wrong, including the woman who is the cause of it all.

I’m not a man who normally bears my problems out for the world to see. Yet, there’s something about receiving such a worried look that cracks me open.

“I’m worried about your fate. This morning, I thought…”

I thought Nicola was coming to take you away from me.

She reaches out automatically and there’s something about the softness of her touch against my hand that eases the tightness of my chest.

If Nicolaislistening, he’s getting one hell of a show from one of his men. I’m not going to be able to meet the man’s gaze again without thinking about it.

Veronica wipes her hands clean and moves to stand. Setting her food down, she tucks her body between my knees and reaches for my face. Making me look at her face, I go a few seconds without thinking about any of these troubling thoughts.

The silence I feel is similar to what I experienced the very first time I saw her tied up. A peaceful bliss I can’t experience without her help.

“He’s not planning on killing me any time soon. I have a plan that will knock his socks off.” Her grin grows and I find myself believing her words without a hint of evidence.

Lifting my hands, I settle my palms against her hips. She’s wearing her favorite hoodie, the one that hides her curves. I’m tempted to slip my hands beneath to feel her warmth directly. Instead, I squeeze her through the thick fabric. Bringing hercloser, I inhale her sweetness before groaning against the front of her stomach.

I don’t want to lose you.

Why is it so hard to vocalize these words? Is it because I don’t want to be perceived as someone weak, someone who can’t protect those he cares for?

After protecting this place for the last few years, I thought I knew the definition like the back of my hand. Veronica opened my eyes to the true meaning of wanting to protect.

Pulling away, I tilt my chin up to get a better look at the woman. Her cheeks are flushed, revealing the same delicious color I’ve gathered a craving for.

I’m caught off guard when she leans down. When her mouth brushes mine, I’m happily distracted by it all.
