At least I knew Dante in my weird way. This woman, does she even know who Nicola is?

“My business is my own.” He’s frowning again, I don’t even need to look.

Shutting me down in an instant, I accept waiting for my curiosities to be filled another day.

His phone chimes and he murmurs a curse under his breath. He excuses himself, wishing me luck and a good night.

While I work in silence, I check the time only twice. Soon, my time behind this computer will end once more.

I’m looking forward to Dante’s arrival.

Yawning, I pull up realtor sites one at a time, searching for blueprints of the building where this ball will take place. If I’m lucky, I’ll find something quickly. Getting into their cameras, which Nicola ensures are there, shouldn’t take too long. A few hours if I work like my ass is on fire.

So much to do, so little time. Tapping away on the keyboard, I groan when the best I get is some outdated pictures.

I groan and fight the urge to thump my head against the desk. All this overtime and I’m getting hardly anything in return.

I should ask for some money next time Nicola swings by. Even if it’s pocket change, reward me withsomething.

“Having a bad time?”

Jerking my head in the direction of the door, I find Dante watching me. How long has he been there staring?

“A frustrating one if anything.” Sighing softly, I move to close everything down. “Trying to meet demands, it’s a bit tiring.”

Tiringis an understatement. My mind is exhausted. My body is in a similar state.

If I lift my arms and beckon him closer, will he pick me up and carry my body through this place? Sure, we’ll gather a lot of attention, but at least I won’t have to worry about keeping up with his long strides.

Amused by the thought of asking, I keep my arms at my sides and peel my body from the chair.

Once everything is powered down, I drag my body over to his and take in the curve of his amused smile. Once I get my arm around his, I take advantage and give his limb a much-needed squeeze.

“Are you hungry?” he asks, catching me off guard.

Normally, he walks me up to my room, sends me off with a chaste kiss, and then I order whatever sounds the tastiest from a menu that comes with the room.

“For bar food?” I ask as we ride up the elevator. Maybe he’s asking if I want him to join me for a meal on my mattress.

“I was thinking something off the street. They have trucks.” He guides me through the flashing lights.

My mouth has never salivated so quickly. An energy I don’t know is there suddenly forms.

“Yes.” I don’t care what we eat, but I’m sure it’ll be far more enjoyable than fancy steaks. Something deep-fried sounds like it can hit the right spot. Maybe even something covered in cheese. I don’t even care enough to be picky.

The chicken tenders he brings for lunch itch a scratch, but it’s not enough to satisfy this craving I have.

He chuckles and that’s that. This will be nothing but another detour. One that isn’t rushed by the hint of meeting any expectations. As long as I’m by his side, I’m sure no one will mind my location.

The night air feels cooler than normal and I enjoy having the excuse to cling a little closer. Taking advantage, I hug his limb and let him guide me wherever he pleases.

We spot three trucks lined up with people lined up. Working in a hot spot like this, it’s no wonder we’ll have to wait. Between the three options, I tug him toward a pizza-themed one.

Waiting in line, I sneak a peek at the man at my side. Puffs of air leave his lips and I’m fascinated with the way he looks over the menu. Does he do this very often?

Is it weird that I want to ask him about his day? What I want between us feels more domesticated and less like I’m still under his careful watch.

Not enough time has passed for the whole Lombardi group to forgive what I’ve done. That’s made clear by the few dirty looks I still get whenever I stretch my legs and take breaks.
