As soon as one of the front guards recognizes her, I am radioed in and on the move. The sooner I find her, the easier my job will be.

Only coming here around once a week, I try to see this time as more of a break than doing my normal routine. Watching people all day is what I do, she’s just a special case. If anything comes up, I’ll be ready to jump into action.

Luckily for me, the woman isn’t the one to start scenes. It makes me think that she knows she’s not supposed to be here. Not without an escort.

If I have to guess, Bria likes to slip away and escape. Eventually, someone always comes and gets her.

Until then, she’s mine to watch over.

When I find the blonde, she’s sitting behind one of her favorite slot machines. Her attention is glued to the screen, and I make sure to keep enough distance to avoid being detected.

Hanging out against the wall, with my arms crossed against my chest, I bring as much attention to myself as all the other men who guard this place.

My eyes are glued, watching and waiting for anything to happen.

I’d like to move closer, but I stay stationed. There has to be a distance between us at all times. I don’t trust myself to get any closer.

Bria is a beauty and that’s an understatement. From my days of watching her, I’ve seen the way men look her way. She’s like a magnet, drawing in all this unwanted attention.

Jealousy nips at my gut from the thought alone and it’s enough to make people pass by quickly as I scowl ahead. As each day passes by, I grow more and more agitated by the thought of her pulling someone in.

I’m no better than any of these bastards.Iwant her too. Ever since she first snuck inside here, I wanted her.

Nicola picked the worst man to take on this babysitting role. Then again, he doesn’t have many options.

With Dante too preoccupied with his hacker girlfriend and the twins obsessing over their own target, I’m the only one with free time. That’s what I’m telling myself. I’d hate to think my boss purposely wants me to suffer.

Bria’s eyes light up with her machine and she grins. Happy with the results, she’s quick to move on.

Cursing under my breath, I’m forced to move from the wall. I’m stalking after her, keeping my safe distance as always.

Does she know I’m watching her? Most definitely. She’ll move from one floor to another to play the same game. She’s a tease on purpose, holding the elevator open for long enough to let me slide in. I don’t join her.

Even if it’s tempting, Ineverjoin her. Seeing her up close is one thing, but being alone in a small metal box is nothing but a promise of disaster.

She’ll have to be satisfied with always being watched from a distance. If she wants company, she can stop risking herself by coming here alone.

Bria moves toward the bar. She plops down on one of the stools and frowns when the bartender immediately gives her a glass of water. No matter what she tries to order, it’ll just get rejected. Knowing that, she sips away at the drink.

She’s in her mid-twenties, above the legal age. If she drinks, she risks getting herself hurt. I’m the one who won’t let her have even a sip.

I take in the empty stools next to her and in the back of my head, there is a small voice coaxing me to join her. She’s never seen me up close, so she won’t know it’smeif I join her. Just once, I can enjoy her presence up close.

Temptation is a bitch. If I went over there, I’d need a drink myself—something with enough of a kick to numb this hunger for long enough to hold a conversation.

I’d kill a man for the opportunity to see her smile up close.

She doesn’t slip away when she finishes her glass. Instead, she turns her head. Those blue eyes search. If I have to guess, she’s looking for me. Her furrowed brows says it all. She’s as frustrated as I am, and I can only hope it’s for the opposite reason.

Bria escapes her home because she’s tired of babysitters. She wants me to approach so she can demand I leave my post andput my attention elsewhere. I can only hope for that scenario. It’ll be a blessing to stop torturing myself.

A frown forms on her lips and her shoulders sink a bit before she calls over Frank for another water. This time, she gets a lemon.

She normally doesn’t spend so much time at the bar. Her attention is constantly on the flashing lights. Wondering what she’s up to, I find somewhere more comfortable to stand.

I don’t expect Dante to appear. Nicola’s been borrowing his hacker for his own secret project. Kicked out from the underground, Dante would rather hang out on my floor than watch from above in his security nook.

“You need to make friends,” I tell him as soon as he settles against the wall next to me. “Find someone who isn’t currently working.”
