I retreated a step, but the creature, sensing my fear, pressed forward with increased vigor.

One of the tentacles from its mouth lunged, moving with a speed that belied its size.

Before I could react, it flopped wetly against my chest, caking my silver jumpsuit with saliva.

The sensation was cold and slimy, and an involuntary squeal of terror escaped my lips.

Ewww!

The tentacle dropped and nuzzled at my crotch.

It was only then that I realized the tentacle wasn’t a tentacle at all… but a penis!

That’s when Talan moved.

His speed was otherworldly.

One moment he was hidden, and the next, he was a blur of motion.

I didn’t see him draw the knife, didn’t see the trajectory of his strike.

All I heard was the hiss of the blade slicing through the air, followed by a dull thud as it found its mark.

The creature gave a surprised, almost pitiful grunt, its many eyes widening in shock.

Then, as if a puppet with its strings cut, it collapsed to the ground with a heavy thud, lifeless.

Trembling, I looked down at the fallen monstrosity, then to Talan, who now stood between me and the creature, blade dripping with a strange, luminescent fluid.

For a moment, we simply stared at each other, the gravity of our situation dawning on both of us.

Without a word, Talan took my hand in his — a surprisingly gentle gesture considering the ferocity he’d just displayed.

He didn’t have to say anything.

The increasing howls and growls, hauntingly close now, said it all.

There were more of them, and they were comingour way.

Talan took me by the hand and led me away as the howls from other alien males drew nearer and nearer.

Talan

As we made our way through the dense foliage, I could sense the apprehension radiating from Riley.

Every rustle, every unfamiliar chirp from the trees above, made her tense.

The weight of her anxiety pressed upon me, but at the same time, a surge of pride flowed through my veins.

The creature we’d dispatched was known to my people as a Draken’vai, one of the most fearsome predators in this galaxy.

But, like all creatures, it had its weaknesses.

If you knew exactly where to strike it, at what angle and depth, it would die instantly.

Finding another clearing, I stopped and turned to Riley, assessing the toll our recent encounter had taken on her.

Her face was pale, eyes wide and reflecting her trauma.
