“You deserve better than me.”

“You’re the best thing to ever happen to me, Cash. I love you. You are everything to me. You’re my heart. Please, don’t break mine.”

Her heart will heal. She’ll find a good man. A man who can give her everything she’s ever wanted. A man who’s clean. Who isn’t a bastard. A man who has a mom and dad who love him. Who didn’t grow up wearing donated clothes. Didn’t grow up wondering where his next meal would come from.

While my heart will always belong to her. No matter what happens in my life, I’m hers. She won’t be mine. She’ll belong to another. But I will always be hers.

“Love isn’t always enough.”

She clutches my hands. “Of course, it is. Haven’t you read the stories? Love conquers all.”

“I wish it did, but stories are just stories.”

“Don’t make me beg.”

I unwind her hands from mine and kiss her nose one last time. “I would never make you beg, Indy. You’re a princess. You should beg no one.”

A lone tear falls down her cheek. I want to brush it away. Brush all of her tears away.

I need to get the hell out of here before I cave. Before I allow her to convince me I’m wrong.

I’m not wrong. I’m not good enough for Indy.

“Goodbye, Indigo.”

I walk out the front door. I don’t look back. Not even when I hear her sob. I keep walking until the sound of her sobs fades. Until the pounding of my broken heart is all I hear.

Chapter 33

Stalking – what happens when a bunch of old women won’t leave you alone

Indigo

The doorbell rings and I peek through the curtains in the living room to check who it is before opening the door. I made the mistake of not checking enough times today. Lesson finally learned.

Phew. It’s Virginia.

I rush to the door and open it before grabbing her elbow to haul her inside. “Get in here.”

“What’s going on?” she asks as she wrests out of my grip.

“You-hoo! Indigo!” Petal hollers as she rushes across the street toward the house.

I push Virginia out of the way and shut the door as if I didn’t hear Petal. For good measure, I lock the door. I don’t trust those gossip gals to not break into my place.

“Away from the door.” I usher Virginia to the kitchen where she sets down the bags of groceries she’s carrying.

“Okay, now you really have to tell me what’s happening.”

“The gossip gals are stalking me.”

Her eyes widen. “Stalking you? Do we need to call the police?”

I snort. “I don’t need the police. I need someone to teach those women what the definition of privacy means.”

“What did they do?”

“Every time I open my door they attack.”
