“Keep your voice down,” is her response.
Oh boy. She doesn’t merely resemble an old-fashioned librarian, she is one.
“Sorry,” I whisper. “I phoned yesterday about donating some books.”
Before she has a chance to answer, the door to the library flies open and Cash and Dylan saunter in carrying two boxes each. She scowls at them.
“Wipe your feet.”
I bite my tongue before I remind her about the whole ‘keeping your voice down’ rule.
“Where should we put the boxes?”
She purses her lips at me before pointing toward a hallway. “In the storage room, I’ll send Virginia your way to help you.”
“Thank you.”
I motion to the guys to follow me to the door marked ‘storage’. “Set them here,” I say.
They set the boxes where I indicate before leaving for the next load.
“One more load,” Cash announces after the second trip. “Be right back.”
“Sorry, sorry,” a woman says as she bustles into the room. “I was working on the computer.”
I smile at her but my smile freezes when I recognize her. “Virginia? Virginia Hale?”
She stares at me for a few seconds before recognition lights her eyes. “Indigo?”
“In the flesh,” I say before hugging her.
When I pull away, she asks, “What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
“I asked first.”
I bark out a laugh. Virginia is a shy thing but once you get to know her, she speaks her mind.
“My grandmother is from Winter Falls. Or, rather, was. She died.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.”
I wave away her concern. “It’s okay.” I inhale a deep breath. “Or it will be.”
Cash and Dylan saunter into the room.
“Look who I found, Cash. You remember my friend Virginia?”
Dylan glances over. His gaze catches on Virginia and he grins. He also forgets to pay attention to what’s in front of him and runs straight into the wall. The boxes topple to his feet as books scatter everywhere.
“What’s going on back there?” Gracious yells.
“Nothing!” Virginia yells back.
“Keep your voice down!”
Virginia rolls her eyes. “You better get out of here. Gracious is going to be a bear with all this ruckus.”
