“Why don’t you ring him?”

I reach for my purse but panic when I realize I didn’t bring one. “I didn’t bring my phone.”

“Here.” He digs his phone out of his pocket.

I murmur my thanks and walk off to find some privacy. I try Mom first but she doesn’t pick up. No surprise there. Guess I’ll try Dad.

“Hey, baby girl,” Dad answers the phone.

“Hi, Dad. Do you know where Mom is?”

When he doesn’t immediately speak, I know his answer is going to anger me.

“She isn’t coming to Saffron’s funeral. I tried to convince her. I even booked our flights and rented a car.”

“But…”

“She refused to go and when I said I was going alone—”

“She threatened to divorce you,” I fill in since this isn’t the first time Mom has pulled that particular trick. It’s one of her favorites.

“I’m sorry, Indigo. I should have called her bluff.”

“It’s okay, Dad. I need to go.”

I hang up. I don’t want to listen to his excuses for putting up with Mom. Not today. Besides, I know them all by heart.

“You okay, Indy?” Cash asks and I glance up to discover the band members have gathered around me.

“Mom’s not coming.”

He wraps me up in his arms. “I’m sorry, Indy girl.”

“Who needs her?” Dylan asks. “You’ve got us.”

“And we’re way prettier to look at,” Gibson declares.

“I’m the prettiest of them all,” Jett declares and Fender slaps his palm in his face to push him away.

“I didn’t know your band was delusional,” I mock whisper to Cash.

“They grow on you. Like a fungus you can’t get rid of.”

Gibson sighs. “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times. If it hurts when you piss, go to the doctor.”

“He would know.” Jett winks.

Dylan grunts. “And now you know why we buy condoms in bulk.”

“Excuse me.” Mrs. West pushes her way through the circle toward me. “Did you reach Raven? Do you know when she’ll arrive?”

“She’s not coming.” I usually don’t have the urge to swear. Teaching small children for years has cured me of mypotty mouth. But today there are some choice words I wouldn’t mind voicing about dear old mom.

“I’m sorry, dear. Maybe we should begin.”

“I’ll be there in a moment.”

She starts toward the crowd again but stops in front of Fender. “Oh my, you are a big boy, aren’t you?”
