She crosses her arms over her chest and taps her foot. “You what?”

“Can’t we let bygones be bygones?”

I’m surprised I don’t turn to ice considering how cold her gaze on me is.

“Let bygones be bygones?”

“I—”

“No!” She cuts me off. “I’m speaking now.” I motion for her to continue but she doesn’t need my permission. “If you want to let bygones be bygones, get out.” She motions to the door. “Get the heck out and never come back. Never show your face to me again.”

“But I’m in Winter Falls to record my album.”

Damn. Do I sound as lame as I think?

She leans close to me and hisses, “I don’t care.” She begins to walk off. “I knew you wouldn’t tell me the truth.”

“I did tell you the truth. I’m not good enough for you.”

“True but you didn’t break up with me because you’re not good enough for me.” She glances over her shoulder. “There’s another reason you’re not telling me.”

I watch her hurry up the stairs. If I let her walk away now, it’s over. I’ll never get another chance with her. I don’t want it to be over. I never want our relationship to be over.

“I don’t want you to hate me.”

She pauses. “Why would I hate you?”

“Because it’s my fault your mom wasn’t here yesterday for the funeral.”

Her eyes widen. “Mom didn’t come to Grandma’s funeral because of you?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do? Sleep with both of them?”

I grunt. “You’re not funny.”

“I’m hilarious.” She clears her throat. “But seriously, what other reason could there possibly be for you to think you’re the reason Mom was a no show yesterday? Mom didn’t show because she’s been fighting with Grandma for a decade.”

“Because I was there.”

Her brow wrinkles. “Because you were there? Mom didn’t come to Winter Falls because you were here?”

I blow out a breath. “I think so.”

“You need to explain yourself.”

I should have never opened my mouth. This explanation is going to hurt Indy, which is the last thing I want to do.

“Can we at least sit down?”

Katy Purry races out of the hallway and down the stairs toward me. I cover my face with my hands. “Not the face.”

Indy sighs. “Stop taunting Katy. She’s perfectly harmless.”

I drop my hands. “Really? Did you not notice today’s present?”

She holds up a hand. “Stop. You can’t distract me with your libelous accusations of my poor kitty.”
