I feign a shiver. “The reason I don’t teach high school.”

“Are you going to tell your mother about your new job?”

I shrug.

He bumps my shoulder. “You need to talk to her.”

I’m not ready to talk to her. I can’t believe she blackmailed Cash into breaking up with me. Doesn’t she want me – her only daughter – to be happy? “We’re not discussing my mother.”

“You need to speak to her at some point.”

I glare at him. “You’re not supposed to be the mature one.”

“Are you saying rockstars can’t be mature? Rockstars can be mature.”

“Old and mature are not the same thing.”

“I’m serious, Indy. You can’t let this fester.”

“Maybe I enjoy letting things fester.”

“I don’t want to drive a wedge between you and your mom.”

I frown at him. “You’re not. This is all on her.”

“She was trying to protect you.”

I snort. “She wasn’t protecting me. She was using you as an instrument to get me to do what she wanted.”

“I don’t understand.”

Dang it! I wasn’t planning on telling him why Mom used the threat she did. I glance away.

He pinches my chin and forces me to face him. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“Who says I’m not telling you something?”

He nods toward my hands. “You’re cracking your knuckles.”

I immediately stop. But it’s too late. Cash knows me too well. Darn him.

“Am I not allowed to have some secrets? Maybe I want to be a woman of mystery?”

He chuckles. “We can play act in the bedroom all you want, but if I’m not allowed to lie to you, you’re not allowed to lie to me.”

“You’re annoying.”

“And you’re cute when you know I’m right.”

“Aren’t I always cute?”

He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and palms my neck. “You’re gorgeous and you know it. Now, tell me what has you fidgeting and ready to destroy your knuckles.”

“Fine!” I throw my arms in the air. “I told Mom I was deferring my enrollment in college for a year.”

His hand spasms. “What were you going to do for a year?”

I roll my eyes. “You know.”
