“Oh yeah?” She wraps her arms around my neck and runs her fingers through my hair. “You were a Wildcat?” One blonde brow arches, and a dimple pops deep in her cheek.

“Fuck. You’re so pretty.” I let my hand move up her back until I’m cupping her head. “Thanks for coming to dinner.”

Her pupils darken as her hand snakes up the front of my shirt. “Cross... I don’t do this.”

“Don’t do what?” I ask, somehow knowing her answer could changeeverything.

She’s quiet while her eyes beg me to understand.

“I don’t date. I don’t do relationships.” She slides her hands up my chest before digging her fingers in the hair at the nape of my neck. “I don’t do this.”

“But you came . . .”

Her expressive eyes hold mine for a second, followed by the tiniest nod. “You’re a hard man to resist.”

“Then don’t.” I twirl a lock of her hair around my finger. It’s silky soft, and I want to feel it dusting my skin when she throws her head back, screaming my name.

Her eyes keep focusing on my lips, and it takes every ounce of strength I have to not slam my mouth against hers and take what I want.

“I need us to take this slow, Cross.” She ghosts her lips against mine.

“Your pace, Everly. My life gets crazy when the season kicks into full gear, and it’s a long fucking season. But I’m here, and I know what I want.”

“You’re going to destroy me, Cross Wilder.”

“I’m pretty sure you’re going to save me, baby.” I drag her to the edge of the counter, my fingers digging into the globes of her ass, taking my time. She’s okay with rushed, but this woman needs to know she deserves so much more than that. I brush my lips over hers, and that cherry taste that is so completely Everly explodes on my lips.

Her long legs lock around my waist, and she whimpers as electricity sparks between us and thunder booms in the distance.

I hear my brother’s heavy feet hitting the stairs and pick Everly up.

“Where—”

I press my lips to hers and grab the monitor from the counter. “Shh, Cinderella.”

A few steps later and I’ve got her outside. I sit us down on the oversized lounge chair in the dark corner of the wraparound porch as the first drops of rain hit the lake in the distance. “I’m done sharing you tonight.”

She straddles my lap, and her skirt inches up to her hips. My hands follow the same path.

“I love the rain,” she whispers, looking out at the lake. “It’s so pretty.”

“Yeah,” I agree, never taking my eyes from her. “Beautiful.”

Everly turns back to me and drags her finger along my lip. “What am I going to do with you, Cross?”

“Anything you want.” And I mean every word of it. I trail my mouth along her jaw as the humidity clings to us like a second skin. One I want gone. But I promised we’d take this slow.

Everly wiggles in my lap, trying to get closer. To quench the need. Her chest rubs against mine. Soft curves fit perfectly against hard planes, just like I knew we would.

Our tongues dance a torturously slow dance. Like it’s our first kiss. Learning. Reconnecting. Setting every fucking nerve-ending aflame while the lightning cracks above the lake, illuminating her gorgeous face for seconds at a time.

Long enough to see the want.

The need.

Long enough to know I’m not in this alone.

The wind whips warm drops of rain under the darkened safety of the porch, dampening our skin. I run my tongue down her neck, licking every last drop, stopping to trace lazy circles over her racing pulse.
