My stomach somersaults. “I guess it’s a good thing my family has a big box then, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, baby. I guess it is.”

Gracie moves in behind Cross and gives methe get your butt movinglook.

“I’ve got to go.” I take a step back as Cross wraps a hand around the back of my hair and pulls me in for a kiss that makes my toes curl.

“Yeah, babe. You better go fix that lipstick.”

“Cocky fucker,” I tease.

“Arrogance, baby. That’s arrogance.”

Cross

Iwatch her walk away before her mom and aunt each link their arms through mine. “Come on, Cross. Let’s buy you a drink,” the aunt says. I think her name is Nattie.

“He can’t drink, Nat. He’s got a concussion,” Annabelle tells her as they lead me back to a bar with a group of people. Some I’ve met, others I haven’t. But one I can pick out in a crowd. “Declan,” his wife calls out to him, and Declan Sinclair, the best quarterback to ever play the game, turns around.

Yeah. He’s also the father of the woman I’m fucking in love with.

And he may or may not be looking at me like he’s going to need help burying my body later.

“Declan, honey, this is Cross.” Annabelle drops my arm, and I reach my hand out to him.

“Nice to meet you, sir.” Fuck.Sir?Really? Thirty-one goddamned years old, and I’m calling him sir.

Everyone around us stops and stares. “You know my best friend is Sam Beneventi.”

“Who?” I ask, genuinely having no clue who that is when everyone breaks out laughing.

“Don’t fuck over my daughter, and you’ll never need to worry about it.” Declan shakes my hand, and I see a guy around the same age as him shaking his head.

“Smooth, Dec. Just use me as your muscle.” Guess he’s Sam.

The owner of Sweet Temptations wraps an arm around his waist. “You’re still big and scary, honey. It’s okay.”

Easton Hayes steps beside me. “I warned you they were crazy. It started with their parents.”

“Want to fill me in on the secret?” I ask him as Ares moves in next to me, and Maddox slides in on the other side of Easton.

“Nah,” Maddox says. “It’s more fun this way.”

“You ready for this, E man?” Callen asks as he hands out beers to everyone but me. “Sorry to hear about the concussion. Fucking sucks.”

“Thanks,” I grumble, not really used to hanging out with a group of guys I don’t know well.

“Fuck no. I’m not ready. My wife is going to walk a runway in her underwear. I don’t know how I’m supposed to be okay with that.”

Maddox slaps his back. “Because you’re who she’s going home with. Besides, I think half the men in this room are related to Lindy. Nobody’s looking at her like that. Now, this guy,” he tilts his head toward me. “You’re fucked, dude. Most of the guys in this room want to nail your girl. Especially when they realize they’re two of them.”

Ares laughs, and I feel my head start to throb. “Thanks, asshole. That’s just the thought I needed.”

“You’re welcome. That’s for banging her in my office.”

I laugh for the first time in a week. “Yeah. Okay. I deserve that.”

“Seriously. I’ve been kicking guys’ asses for years, defending the two of them,” Callen adds.
