Relief trickles through me that I don’t have to explain myself. That I don’t have to unleash the big, scary ghosts in my past, and instead, we can just move on.

I nod, still feeling a little shaky but much better overall.

I guess my surge of panic didn’t scare him off, but he doesn’t stop me when I reach down to button my shorts.

Once they’re fastened and I have at least an illusion of safety, Silvan takes my hand and entwines our fingers.

It’s a startling, almost tender gesture for a pushy stranger to make.

I look up at him, and he gives me a look that feels reassuring.

Then he leads me deeper into the darkened hallway, and like a fool, I follow.

Chapter Four

Silvan

I drag Sophie into the escape room, my heart thundering in my chest.

I’m still reeling from our impromptu kiss in the hallway, and now I’m even more determined to claim her as mine.

I’ve never been so shaken up by a kiss before.

She was clearly shaken up, too, though I suspect for different reasons.

Not that she didn’t enjoy the kiss. She might want to pretend she didn’t, but those moans that slipped from her pretty lips as I rubbed my thigh against her pussy told the truth. The way her fingers dug into my shoulders and her eyes drifted closed.

She wanted to be fucked; she just didn’twantto want it.

My pretty little farm girl is severely repressed. Don’t know why. Don’t even care. I just know I’m going to have to fix it.

“What are we even looking for?” Sophie asks, her voice soft and a little shy as we make our way through the main entry doors into a small outer chamber.

We spent a good chunk of change building this escape room in the ballroom, but I don’t care if it’s just for a party; I don’t do anything half-assed.

“This isn’t the escape room,” I tell her.

“It isn’t?” She looks around at the table set up with paper and pens, then at the one to the left. That one has a water stationwith disposable cups so people can get a drink before they enter this room since they might be locked inside for an hour if they don’t solve the puzzles.

I gesture to the liability waiver my family’s lawyer insisted on having the guests sign. “You’ll have to sign one of those before we go in.”

Her eyes widen and snap to my face. “What?”

“Just saying you won’t sue for any emotional distress or possible injury you might sustain in the escape room.”

“I’m not signing anything,” she informs me. “I don’t even want togointo this escape room thing, but certainly not if there’s a risk of emotional distress or possible injury.”

I smirk and grab her hand. “You run a risk of that anytime you hang out with me.”

“I don’t want to hang out with you, either,” she mutters.

I laugh and haul her over to the entry doors. I don’t care if she signs the waiver or not. “You ready?”

“Nope.”

I nod and push the door open anyway.

When we step through the door, it’s like stepping back in time.
