“How about this? Give me the cat.”

She looks over her shoulder as if she’s unsure she’s allowed to just reach in and grab it, but then she does. She’s getting more used to the idea that she can do whatever she wants.

The kitten’s claws come out and cling to her sweater.

There’s probably little chance we’re not taking this guy home, but the lady said these two needed to be homed together, and I really do not want two cats right now.

“Now get the lazy one.”

She scoops the sleepy one out. It blinks at her, but otherwise remains in a ball of unmoving fluff. I juggle their flexible little bodies so I’m snuggling both of them, then I pass Sophie my phone.

“Take a picture.”

She’s got the big, wobbly anime eyes looking at me so I’m pretty sure it’s a good pose. “If you hadn’t already put a baby in me…”

I laugh and she snaps a couple of pictures. I take the phone back and hand off the kittens, then I make a quick post blatantly shilling for them and tag the shelter we’re browsing for our kitten. “There,” I tell her before slipping my phone back into my pocket. “They’ll be adopted by the end of the day.”

She lowers the lazy cat back to its sleeping spot and nuzzles the playful one. “You know, ordinarily, I would take issue with you posting thirst traps like that, but I appreciate you using your hotness for a good cause.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love all that save-the-world shit you’re into. Now, can you put that cat down so we can look at the ones we can actually adopt?”

She catches the kitten’s tiny paws in her hand. “I want to, it’s just… he’s so cute I could die.”

Since prying her away from this kitten isn’t going to be easy, I take a lap to see what other cute kittens I can find to draw her attention away from that one.

There’s a whole litter of tabbies frolicking around that she hasn’t even made it to yet. I’ll have to put a blindfold on her to get her past all that cuteness.

Past the tabbies, in a cage by itself, I see a cute little white-and-gray ball of fur. Its coloring looks like it got droppedinto a mud puddle and shook itself off but little bursts of gray remained.

He looks attentive. I like that, so I walk closer to get a better look at him.

He sees me coming and takes a cautious step toward me to check me out, too.

“Hey, little guy. You in the market for a mommy?”

The kitten walks forward and brushes up against the cage.

This one seems more selective than the easy charmer Sophie’s playing with. I can see why her head got turned—she doesn’t have the best taste in guys, after all—but this guy’s got the attention span. I feel like you’d have to win him over, but once you do, he’s loyal for life.

“Come here, you.” I open his cage and scoop him out. He sits on my hand and watches curiously as I bring him up to my chest, then he ventures closer, gently walks his little paws up to stand on me, and claws the fuck out of me.

I can’t help laughing. I like his spirit.

“Yeah, I think you can beat that other cat for her attention. Let’s go find out.”

I cradle the kitten so he doesn’t fall and break his little neck, then I sneak up on Sophie. She put the other kitten back in his cage, but she’s still playing with him.

“What about this one?”

She turns around and gasps, leaning down so she can visit with this ball of cuteness. “Aw, aren’t you a handsome boy?”

He likes her. He goes strutting toward her and when she picks him up, he gazes at her the way I do.

“I think he looks like a Snowball.”

“Are you a Snowball?” she asks in the cutesy voice she uses to talk to baby animals. The kitten flops over on his back and bats at her finger as she dangles it for him. “Oh, he’s socute.” She looks up at me, bright-eyed. “Good find, baby.”

I grab her waist and tug her in for a forehead kiss. “I’ve got a good eye,” I murmur teasingly.
