“Why do you ask so many damn questions?” Judas grits as he opens a chest and starts rummaging through it. I flip him off while his back is turned.

“I saw that, little doe,” Micah whispers, lips just centimeters away from my ear. His breath on my neck makes me shiver.

Judas slams the chest closed and turns around. He’s holding rope, a crossbow, and a quiver of arrows.

My heart plummets into my stomach.

I knew it. They’re going to kill me.

Chapter 15

MICAH

Anticipating her actions,I grab Raine around the waist when she shoots up from the stool. The metal is loud as it clangs against the cement of the garage floor.

“No, no,please!”

She starts thrashing, kicking, and screaming at the top of her lungs as if someone will hear. Too bad for her, we’re all alone out here in the middle of these woods; we haven’t seen a single person out here since I was ten.

Dad puts everything down and comes to help me wrangle Raine, but not before her head whips back and cracks me in the fucking nose. I grunt and drop her to the ground.

“That’s enough, sweetheart,” Dad says in a tone so soft it shocks the hell out of me. He’s never spoken to anyone that way before, not even Mom.

Surprisingly, Raine settles enough to stand on her feet, but she puts as much distance between us as she can.

Good, because I fear I’ll actually kill her for almost breaking my nose.

“Come over here and sit down, Raine,” he says more harshly. Hesitantly, she walks back over to where we are and stands next to the ATV. “Keep fighting us and see what happens.”

Her throat works as she swallows.

“Pick up the stool and sit your ass back down.”

Raine and I both flinch at his sharp tone, but she picks up the stool and sits down as she was told. Her body is still tense, as if she’s poised to run again.

Dads grabs a rag from the clean pile in the corner and tosses it to me. I glare at Raine as she watches me wipe away the blood dripping down my face.

“Let’s play a little game, sweetheart,” he says deviously.

Raine eyes him apprehensively. “What kind of game?”

He spreads everything on the hood of the ATV for her to see. “Adangerousgame—a game of survival.”

Chapter 16

RAINE

“Wait—”

“Shut up,” Judas snaps, eyes hard on me.

Fear is a heavy weight on my bones. I try to keep my bottom lip from quivering, but it’s hard now that I know I won’t be making it out of this house alive, or at the very least, in one piece.

I look over at Micah, hoping he’ll do or say something to intervene, but he’s pissed that I hurt his nose. Even if I didn’t, he still wouldn’t do anything—he hasn’t the whole time I’ve been here.

Judas grabs my arm roughly and yanks me off the stool so hard I nearly fall. My heart is racing so fast I feel like I’m about to pass out. We’re on a tiny island—where are they taking me?

Micah knows I can’t swim, so maybe they’ve decided to drown me. Or they could be taking me back to shore, which will work in my favor because I can just make a break for it again.
