No, that’s not true,a voice in my head says fiercely.

It’snottrue—I have my two men to spend the rest of my life with.

When Micah’s done washing my hair, he rinses the shampoo away and uses a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle the strands.

“I watched some videos,” he says, but he almost sounds like he’s talking to himself. When I look at him, he’s watching his fingers running through my hair. I almost ask him what he’s talking about when he says, “I wanted to make sure I did it right.”

My hair. He’s talking about my hair.

I reach out and touch his wrist. “You did that for me?”

He nods.

My bottom lip starts to quiver. I’m touched that he would take the time to research something for me.

We sit in a comfortable silence as he washes my hair one more time. Something in my heart tugs at the gentility of his hands, the intimacy of him washing my hair for me.

Is this what love feels like? I’ve never been in love before, so I have no idea.

When Micah is done, he takes a washcloth with soap and starts washing my body. He does so with intention, washing my intimate parts without trying to arouse me. When he gets to my back, I moan when he starts kneading the knots in my shoulders and the base of my neck.

After a few minutes, he rinses me off and pulls the plug to drain the tub. I stand up, and he wraps me in a soft, fluffy towel and helps me out. I sit back down on the toilet and watch as he pulls a bunch of hair care products from an oversized basket underneath the sink.

Holding it up to me, he says, “I didn’t know what to buy, so I got everything.”

I smile. “That’s okay.”

I dig through the basket and pull out the things I need. Micah takes each item silently in the order I give them to him, and he starts working them into my hair. When he’s done, my hair is heavy from product and ready to air dry for the next few hours.

I get off the toilet and get on my tiptoes to kiss him. “Thank you,” I whisper.

He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me in for a longer, deeper kiss. His tongue brushes over mine deliciously, and my core starts to ache with desire. I sigh into his mouth and lean against him, basking in his warmth and the way his arms make me feel safe.

When we finally break apart, breathless and red-faced, he tucks some hair behind my ear. “I would do anything for you, Raine. That’s why we left you in the cage. You had to learn how lucky you are to have us. You understand that, don’t you, little doe?”

I nod. I do understand. Now I see that everything they’ve done for me has been to help me.

Micah leads me back into his bedroom and hands me some clothes, the usual oversized t-shirt and sweatpants I’ve been wearing since I've been here.

“Let’s go get you some food.”

I slip my hand into his and walk with him out of the room.

Chapter 28

JUDAS

When my sweetheartwalks into the kitchen, I want to jump out of my chair and pull her into my arms, but I refrain.

Control yourself, Judas.

She sits at the table and looks hungrily at what I’ve made her for lunch: a turkey sandwich with chips and a glass of water.

It was harsh of us to deprive her of food and water for so long, but I wanted her to understand the weight of her actions. Shewillbe the one to bear our children, the one we’ll spend the rest of our lives with.

There is nothing and no one else buther.

Raine looks at Micah and me as if to ask if she’s allowed to eat. I give her a curt nod and watch as she devours her food.
