Murphy smirks. “It looks like jizz.”

Ryder chuckles. “It does.”

“Fuck off, the both of you.” I yank my sweater over my head, leaving me in an untucked black button-down shirt.

“Don’t get grumpy on us now,” Murphy says.

I’m not grumpy. I’m annoyed with my reaction to a certain brunette.

What is it about Lucy that makes me turn into an asshole whenever we’re within twenty feet of each other?

Is it because she’s the first woman I’ve been attracted to since the Destiny fiasco?

She’s a sexy little smokeshow, and that southern accent of hers… I could listen to her talk all day. Hell, she can yell at me all day, and I’d enjoy the sound. She’s tried to be polite to me, and each time we interact, I’ve given her a reason to be angry instead.

“So, what happened to your sweater for real?” Murphy asks.

“I crashed into Lucy.”

Murphy snickers. “On purpose?”

“No. Why would I have purposely done that?”

He looks at me like I’m clueless. “To give you a reason to strike up a conversation.”

“Dude, I don’t need excuses to converse with a woman. That’s one area where I’ve never had any problems.”At least, not until Lucy.

“Did you get her number?” Ryder asks.

“Whose?”

“Lucy’s. She’s single, if you’re wondering.”

“No, I didn’t, and I haven’t… been wondering.”

Liar.

Naturally, I’ve been curious about my neighbor.

“I figured with the two of you living next door to each other, it might be convenient,” Ryder says.

“Convenient for what?” I ask.

“To play Monopoly,” Murphy drolls.

“For hooking up,” Ryder says at the same time.

I hold up my hand, signaling for them to stop. “I’m not interested in complicating my life.”

“That’s why Lucy would be the perfect choice. She’s nearby. She’s beautiful. And she’s single. What more reason do you need?” Murphy asks.

“She may be all those things, but I’m not looking to get involved with anyone right now.”

“Bro, you can’t let what happened with that bitch Destiny fuck up the rest of your life,” Murphy says.

Anger sinks its sharp nails into my chest at the mention of her name. “Right?” He presses me for an answer.

I exhale a long sigh. “I know you guys mean well, but I’m still grieving. There’s no shortcut to stopping the process—it has to run its course. I’ve tried to stop feeling this way, but it is what it is.”
