When the players reach our table, Niall smiles as if he’s pleased to see me sitting here.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hey!” Maeve squeals, hopping up to hug him.

“Great game, bro,” Rogan says, bumping his fist.

Niall moves closer and my mind goes into panic mode.Should I hug him or not?

He makes the decision for me, squeezing my shoulder.

A twinge of disappointment stirs inside me. I should’ve hugged him. What is this, high school?

He sits next to me in the chair Calista vacated when Ryder walked in. “How did you like the game?” He looks eager to find out.

“It was great. I especially enjoyed watching you,” I say.

His dark-blond eyebrows jump. “You did?”

“Yep. You played a dominant game and took charge. The other team seemed intimidated by you at times.”

He beams. “You’re good for my ego.”

“Unlike most professional athletes, you seem like you’re more apt to understate your ability than to brag.”

“Staying humble is important to me.”

“You’re talented. I was impressed,” I say.

“Thank you. So, should I ask you if you’re ready to admit hockey is greater than football?”

I shake my head. “Not unless you want to be disappointed.”

He laughs. “Maybe after a couple more games you’ll change your mind.”

“Who says I’m going to another?” I ask coyly.

“You didn’t get to see a true battle tonight. They never challenged us for the win. You need to see a game against one of our tougher opponents. It adds to the excitement.”

“I suppose I can give one more a shot. But I’m wearing earmuffs next time. My ears were freezing, and I think I might have permanent hearing loss from the loud cheering.”

The corners of his eyes crinkle when he smiles. This is the happiest I’ve ever seen him. Hockey is clearly his passion.

Nikki appears beside the table, passing out drinks and appetizers. “Hey, Niall. You want a beer?” she asks.

“Hi, Nikki. I’d love one.” She hands him a bottle before moving on to Murphy.

“Should we share our food with Niall?” Maeve asks, and I nod.

“No,” Rogan says.

I laugh. “We have a lot of food.”

“I can eat all this by myself,” he states.

“How are you paying for this?” Niall asks.

Rogan presses his lips together, nodding. “Fair point.”
