“I wouldn’t know about that.”

He nods. “I guess you wouldn’t. Do you have any other siblings?”

“One.” But I don’t tell him any more information about that because the less they know about any weaknesses of mine, the better.

Kohen doesn’t press further on the specifics of that subject and asks me, “You’re the middle child then?” I nod. “Like Finn.”

It takes everything in me not to roll my eyes because if he’s looking for something we’d have in common, that’d be all.

“Before I forget”—Kohen slides down a bit in his chair and shoves his hand into his pocket, retrieving a little box—“A gift from our mother. She apologizes that she couldn’t meet you today. She had other obligations to attend to, but she looks forward to meeting you, Miss Kincaid.”

He offers the box, and I instantly hesitate to take it. However, I lean forward, pluck the maroon box from his grasp, and sit upright back in my chair.

Cracking the lid, a beautiful Emerald hangs off a silver necklace, and it’s small but still gorgeous, just the same.

“This is…extremely generous,” I claim as I glance back up at Kohen. “I love Emeralds. They’re my favorite.”

Kohen smiles at me. “I’m glad you like it. I’ll be sure to let her know.”

“Please tell her I said thank you. I’m…” I run the pad of my index finger down the gem because I’ve never received anything so eye-catching in my life. “I love it. Thank you, Kohen.”

“Of course,” he beams. “It’ll look beautiful on you.”

I blush slightly before I see Finn shifts in his chair, however, I don’t dare spare him a glance in his direction. If he wants it, he can open his mouth.

“I’ll be sure to take good care of it,” I promise, and even though I don’t want to go through with any of this, their mother sounds more than kind to offer such a piece to an absolute stranger.

“I’m sure you will. Our mother is thrilled that Finn is finally getting married.”

She’d only make one of us.

Yet, this can’t be the end of my story. Being handed off for an alliance and expecting to sit here for the rest of my life to a stranger who won’t even say more than two words to me.

Haven. Wife.

It sounded like another threat. Another way to control the situation that we were in. He found me with Enzo and probably wished I wasn’t there, not that it stopped him. His confidence on the matter that I didn’t rat him out worked, and that alone probably strokes his ego.

It also drives me crazy.

If I’m going to survive this, I need to survive my husband. If he’s going to kill me, he’s going to do it to a woman who wasn’t afraid to speak up. To state that she didn’t want him or any of this in the first place.

And I won’t be the only one bleeding.

Because I won’t go down without a fight.

If Papa and Cillian want to use me, I can’t do anything about that. I can’t run because of Taylen, and I refuse to leave her behind for their devices.

So I’ll stay.

For now.

Until I can come up with a better plan if this becomes too painful and every bad scenario I’ve conjured up in my head.

I’m a Kincaid.

And even though that name means representing my family, I’m still Irish.

I’m strong, resilient, and I won’t go down without a fight.
